Many business owners focus on VAT registration but very few pay attention to VAT deregistration.
In the UAE, you cannot stay registered for VAT if you no longer meet the requirements. The law clearly states when you must apply for deregistration.
You need to apply for VAT deregistration if:
- You stop making taxable supplies completely.
For example, if you close the business or stop trading.
- Your taxable supplies over the last 12 consecutive months fall below the voluntary registration threshold (AED 187,500), and you do not expect your supplies or taxable expenses in the next 30 days to exceed that amount.
Important deadline:
You must submit the deregistration application within 20 business days from the date the condition occurs and failing to apply on time can lead to penalties.
If your business activity has reduced recently, it may be time to review your VAT position.
