Tax rate changes for eligible taxpayers

Company Loss Carry Back:

Proposed tax change from 1 July 2026: Eligible companies may be able to carry back tax losses for up to 2 years and receive a refund of tax paid in prior profitable years.

Startup Loss Refundability:

small start-ups in their first 2 years may be able to turn tax losses into a refundable offset, limited to taxes already paid (including FBT and PAYG withholding on wages).

Cahnges to Capital Gains Tax calculations:

From 1 July 2027, CGT calculations are proposed to move to an indexation-based method, replacing the current 50% CGT discount.

Changes to Negative Gearing:

From 1 July 2027, only newly built residential properties are proposed to qualify for negative gearing against other income. Existing residential investment properties purchased before 12 May 2026 are expected to retain the current negative gearing rules.
