Not necessarily in that order. 😂

The school holiday juggle

To every small business owner juggling work and school holidays...

You're doing more than most people realise.

The emails, the invoices, the meals, the laundry, the activities—and somehow you're keeping the business moving too.

Be proud of what you've achieved this week. 💙

- each week has its own focus

Some weeks are for growing your business. Some weeks are for surviving school holidays.

Both count.

Your business doesn't need perfection—it needs consistency over time. 💙

📣 Is your Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) due?

If your business pays contractors in industries such as building & construction, cleaning, courier, road freight, IT or security services, you may need to lodge a Taxable Payments Annual Report.

🗓️ The annual report is due by 28 August each year.

If you're not sure whether TPAR applies to your business, don't leave it until the last minute. A quick check now can save unnecessary stress later.

Your bookkeeper can help you:
✔️ Confirm if you need to lodge.
✔️ Check your contractor details.
✔️ Prepare and lodge your report on time.

A little preparation now makes August much smoother. 💙

Budgeting Tips for the New Financial Year

𝟭. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁
Base it on actual historical data, not just hopes or assumptions or guessing!
Include fixed costs (rent, wages) and variable costs (marketing, materials).

𝟮. 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀
Open a dedicated business bank account.
Helps with accurate tracking, tax time, and professional credibility.

𝟯. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿
It's confronting, but tracking every dollar is great for giving each dollar a purpose and avoid mindless transactions.

𝟰. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿
Set aside GST, PAYG, and super contributions in a separate account to avoid nasty surprises from the ATO.

𝟱. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁
Understand how much you need to earn to cover your costs. Knowing this helps with your pricing and planning promotions.

- Record Keeping!

Good record keeping isn’t just good business practice, it’s the law.

Here’s what every Australian business owner needs to keep on file.

💰 Financial and tax records including:
✅ all income and sales transactions
✅ assets, stock and GST
✅ bank and year-end records
✅ tax credits.

👨‍💼 Employee records for 7 years, including:
✅ employee details and employment history
✅ pay, deductions, hours, overtime and leave
✅ superannuation contributions and calculations
✅ how employment ended.

You must also keep tax and super records for 5 years, including payment records and evidence of super fund choice.

Digital or paper?
Records can be digital or paper, but must be stored securely and remain accurate and accessible. Digital copies of paper records are acceptable if they are clear and true reproductions.

Payroll Finalisation - Deadline 14th of July

📢 STP Finalisation Deadline Approaching?
Single Touch Payroll finalisation can be more challenging than it looks.

Common issues we see include:
🔹 Missing employee information
🔹 Incorrect payroll categories
🔹 Unreported allowances or deductions
🔹 Superannuation discrepancies
🔹 Employee records not reconciled to payroll reports
🔹 Closely held payees not correctly reported

Taking the time to review your payroll data before finalising can save headaches for both employers and employees at tax time.

✅ Reconcile payroll reports
✅ Check employee details
✅ Review allowances, deductions and super
✅ Confirm year-to-date figures are accurate

Please don't put pressure on your bookkeeper to hurry this process - you don't want the pain of amendments.
