--KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR--
I love the Lakers, the NBA basketball team. There isn't much about them that I don't know, I've been a fan since I was really small.
First off, they won the championship this year, the first time in 10 years. But it was an incredible season navigating the Covid 19 crisis in the USA by creating a "Basketball Bubble" to play out the season.
Three years ago Alex Caruso, a player on this championship team alongside LeBron James was undrafted and unwanted by the NBA after his college career. But he played a big role for the Lakers this year and ended up starting in the championship game for the Lakers.
His path to starting on this championship team was in the "G League". It's a development league for players not good enough for the NBA; it's low paying, tiny crowds, travel in buses not private jets etc. Alex was one of the few players who "escaped" from the G League and is now forging a long career in the NBA. Along the way he became a cult hero; he looks like an accountant but has landed some of the biggest dunks and his defensive statistics are some of the best in the league. It's not bad for a short, bald, white guy!
In an interview about his journey he made an interesting comment about how he got out of the G League.
"A big reason guys get stuck in the G-League is because they don't realise the position they are trying out for. It's like going to a job interview thinking you're going to be the CFO of the company and they're looking for someone to clean the bathrooms."
What do others need right now? What are they looking for? Even if you can be the CFO, they aren't going to hire you if they really need a janitor. If you want to get "lucky breaks" - know what people are looking for.
