My name is Kat and I'm 27. I was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2 which basically means the nerves that are responsible for movement doesn't get from my brain to those muscles. Meaning my muscles are not active so they deteriorate or waste away.
I have my certificate III in accounts administration and my certificate III and IV in Community Services. I work 3 days a week at a call centre and I've been manage my own NDIS plan for the past 4 years.
Self-Management
Managing my own NDIS plan is like having a full-time job I don't just pay my own invoices from services providers but I directly hire my own support staff which includes scheduling of supports , paying wages, withholding tax and contributing to their choice of superannuation, reporting to the ATO and issuing payment summaries at the end of the financial year. I have legal obligations not just as a self managing participant but as an employer. I require appropriate workplace insurance, and ensuring that I keep up to date with all my legal and safety requirements when I first started managing my own plan I was so nervous but after further education and having my own accountant at the beginning my confident started to grow. Self managing has giving me so much more choice and control over my life and has enable me to get more out of funding.
My passion is to have a career in Disability and the National Disability Insurance Scheme. I believe my own personal experience and the knowledge I've gained from my certificates will help me to be able to connect with my clients on a more personal level because I know how hard life can get.
I want my clients to feel like they have choice and control over their life. I want my clients to feel like they have a voice and to be heard.
