Happy New Year
Is it too late to say, “Happy New Year”? Probably, but I have a great offer for business owners that I wanted to share with you.

Claiming work clothing

Now, we all wear clothes to work (well I hope we all do) unfortunately just because we only wear certain clothes for work, doesn’t mean we can claim them as an expense.

https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/income-deductions-offsets-and-records/deductions-you-can-claim/clothes-and-items-you-wear-at-work/clothing-laundry-and-dry-cleaning-expenses.

Industry related clothing such as grooming aprons and waterproof grooming tops are deductable.

The ATO does not allow deductions for “conventional clothing” worn for work purposes. “'Conventional clothing’ is everyday clothing worn by people regardless of their occupation – for example, black trousers worn by waiters, business attire worn by office workers, or jeans or drill shirts worn by tradespeople.”

For the dog walkers among us, you CAN claim the purchase of clothing with a UPF rating as you work outdoors.

The list of what is allowed and what is not, is extensive. It is best to look at the ATO link above.

Please be careful of “abc said I could claim xyz, so I do”. Regardless of who is telling you what, it is the ATO who has the final say.

When using your personal vehicle for work, you can claim up to 5,000km @88 cents per km or you can run a log book for 12 weeks and claim a percentage of all your car expenses (fuel, tyres, services).

Now!! If you haven't already hired one, you should do it soon. Ideally, you should hire a bookkeeper soon after starting your business.

Otherwise, you could end up with months of receipts and invoices to be processed. That takes time and may be difficult to do.
