That extra 10% sitting in your bank account isn’t extra income.

GST collected on your sales is generally money you’re collecting for the ATO.

GST paid on eligible business purchases may reduce the amount you owe.

The problem?

If you spend the GST you’ve collected, you could be short on cash when your BAS payment is due.

Set the GST aside as you collect it so the money is there when you need it.

Lodging a tax return is one thing. Understanding what comes after is another.

Many business owners submit and move on — but the post-lodgement process has a few important steps that are worth knowing about. Processing typically takes around 12 business days. Your return status is trackable through myGov. Your Notice of Assessment tells you exactly where you stand. And if you spot an error, there is a straightforward way to amend it.

Our latest blog covers all of this in plain English, including how to tell the difference between genuine ATO communications and scam messages — something that's become increasingly important.

Salary, drawings or dividends? The right option depends on your business structure.

How you pay yourself depends on your business structure.

- Sole trader: Take owner's drawings. You're taxed on your business profit, not your drawings.

- Partnership: Partners usually take drawings and pay tax on their share of the partnership profit.

- Company: You may pay yourself a salary, director fees and/or dividends. Each has different tax and super obligations.

- Trust: You may receive a salary if employed by the trust and/or beneficiary distributions, depending on the trust deed.

Here are some planning tips for FY 2026–2027:

- Choose a payment method that matches your structure.
- Make sure payroll, PAYG, super and STP obligations are met.
- Keep drawings, wages, dividends and distributions clearly recorded.
- Review your pay based on profitability, cash flow and business growth.
- Speak with your accountant or registered tax agent before making changes.
