Financial Advisor vs Tax Advisor: What’s the Difference? πŸ€”πŸ’Ό
Many people use these terms interchangeably but they actually play very different roles when it comes to your finances. Here’s a simple breakdown:

πŸ”Ή Financial Advisor
A financial advisor helps you plan and grow your wealth over time. They typically assist with:
βœ”οΈ Investment strategies
βœ”οΈ Retirement planning
βœ”οΈ Superannuation advice
βœ”οΈ Insurance and risk management
βœ”οΈ Long-term financial goals
πŸ“œ Licensing:
Financial advisors must be authorised under an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL), regulated by ASIC (Australian Securities & Investments Commission).
πŸ‘‰ Think of them as your big-picture strategist for building wealth.

πŸ”Ή Tax Advisor (Accountant)
A tax advisor focuses on minimising tax and ensuring compliance with tax laws. They typically help with:
βœ”οΈ Preparing and lodging tax returns
βœ”οΈ Tax planning and structuring
βœ”οΈ Capital gains tax advice
βœ”οΈ Business structure advice
βœ”οΈ ATO compliance
πŸ“œ Licensing:
Registered tax agents are governed by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB)
πŸ‘‰ Think of them as your tax efficiency expert - helping you keep more of what you earn (legally!).

βš–οΈ Key Difference
A financial advisor focuses on growing your money while a tax advisor focuses on protecting it from unnecessary tax and keeping you compliant.
πŸ’‘ The best results often come when both work together as part of your advisory team.

If you’re unsure which advice you need or want both perspectives aligned - we are here to help.

$61,000 in deductions. $1,500 approved. 😬 This is a real ATO case and honestly it's a lesson for all of us. Reconstructed logbooks, a conference that never existed, a language class with zero connection to his job, and a 6-person household claiming 70% home office expenses… The ATO saw through every single one.

And here's the thing people don't realise - the ATO now uses AI and data matching. They cross-check your employer, your bank, your rideshare history, your receipts. They are not guessing.

So if you're not 100% sure what you can claim - please talk to a bookkeeper or accountant first. Claim everything you're entitled to. But don't get greedy. It's never worth it. πŸ’Έ Save this and share it with someone who needs the reminder πŸ‘‡

The #1 bookkeeping habit every small business owner needs from day one πŸ‘‡
Separate your personal and business bank accounts and yes, that includes your credit card πŸ’³

It sounds simple but it is a game changer when tax time rolls around. And when you start using accounting software, clean accounts mean reconciliations take MINUTES instead of hours.

Your future self (and your tax accountant πŸ˜…) will thank you.
Save this and share it with someone just starting out πŸ™Œ

That ATO audit letter can make your stomach drop instantly. 😰

But before you panic, remember this: an audit does not always mean you have done something wrong.

Sometimes the ATO simply wants more information, documents or clarification around something in your return. The key is knowing how to respond properly and not making the situation worse by ignoring it or guessing your way through it.

If you receive an audit notice, take it seriously, read it carefully and speak to a registered tax agent before responding.

At TCBS, we can help you understand what the ATO is asking for, prepare the right documents and communicate with them on your behalf so you are not dealing with it alone.

Received an ATO audit letter? Let us look at it before you reply.

What is TPAR and do you need to lodge it?

TPAR is known as Taxable Payments Annual Report.
If your business pays contractors for services, the ATO requires you to report those payments every year. This is called a TPAR and the deadline is 28 August.

Here's what you need to report: β†’ Contractor's name and ABN β†’ Total amount you paid them (including GST) β†’ Total GST included in those payments

Who needs to lodge? Businesses in these industries that pay contractors: πŸ”¨ Building & construction 🧹 Cleaning 🚚 Courier & road freight πŸ’» IT services πŸ”’ Security, investigation & surveillance 🌿 Landscaping & gardening 🩺 Mixed industries (if 10%+ of income is from a relevant service)

What happens if you miss it? Penalties. The ATO takes this one seriously.

πŸ‘‰ Check the ATO website for the full list of industries and obligations: πŸ”— https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/preparing-lodging-and-paying/reports-and-returns/taxable-payments-annual-report

The good news? If you've been keeping good records of your contractor payments throughout the year, lodging is straightforward.

Not sure if your business needs to lodge or behind on your records? Come and chat, we'll sort it out before the deadline. πŸ“…

Rental property owners, this is one of those tax rules that catches a lot of people out. 🏑

You might think, β€œI drove there to inspect the property, so surely I can claim it?”

But for residential rental properties, travel expenses are generally not deductible for most individual investors.

That can include travel to:
β€’ Inspect the property
β€’ Meet your agent or tenant
β€’ Organise repairs
β€’ Collect rent
β€’ Check maintenance work

Since 1 July 2017, these costs generally cannot be claimed, and in most cases, they also cannot be added to the property’s cost base for CGT purposes.

The good news? Many other rental property expenses may still be deductible, such as loan interest, council rates, repairs, property management fees, insurance and depreciation where applicable.

The key is knowing the difference before you lodge.

Not sure what you can claim on your rental property? Get advice before the ATO asks questions later.

"When can I start paying myself?" if you've asked this as a sole trader, this one's for you. πŸ‘€ The business IS you. There's no salary, no PAYG, no payroll setup. You draw from your profit and pay income tax on all of it. Clean and simple - but so many people don't realise this until tax time hits.

β€œI’m doing everything myself… and I’m burning out.” If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

A lot of business owners start off handling their own bookkeeping, payroll, BAS, tax and admin because it feels easier, quicker or cheaper at the time. But slowly, it starts taking over.

Instead of focusing on clients, sales, growth and the parts of the business you actually enjoy, you end up stuck in receipts, payroll runs, deadlines and ATO reminders.

The truth is, your time is valuable.

At TCBS Accounting & Advisory, we help business owners take the pressure off by looking after:

β€’ Bookkeeping and financial records
β€’ Payroll and superannuation compliance
β€’ BAS and tax compliance
β€’ Business and tax planning

We help you stay organised, understand your numbers and plan ahead with more confidence.

If you are feeling stretched too thin, this is your sign to stop doing it all alone.

πŸ“© Send us a message and let’s take the financial pressure off your plate.

β€œCan I pay myself a salary as a sole trader?”

This is one of those questions that sounds simple but can get confusing very quickly.

As a sole trader, you are not separate from your business. That means you generally do not put yourself on payroll like an employee.

When you take money out of the business, it is usually treated as drawings, not wages.

And here’s the part many sole traders miss:

πŸ’‘ Drawings do not reduce your tax
πŸ’‘ You still need to set money aside for tax
πŸ’‘ PAYG instalments may apply
πŸ’‘ Super is not compulsory for yourself, but it is still worth planning for
πŸ’‘ If you have staff, payroll rules still apply to them

Understanding this early can save you from a painful tax bill later.

At TCBS Accounting & Advisory, we help sole traders understand their numbers, stay compliant and plan properly, so there are fewer surprises at tax time.
