It’s been a little quiet over here lately but behind the scenes life has been full on.

Between swimming lessons, calisthenics, school drop offs and mum life with two little humans, the start of the year has been busy. We also hit a big milestone in our family with my eldest starting Foundation, which has been such a special (and slightly emotional) moment.

Even though social media has been quiet, I’ve been busy behind the scenes supporting my existing clients and welcoming a few new ones already this year, which I’m so grateful for.

If you’ve been meaning to get your bookkeeping sorted but keep putting it off, this is your sign. I still have availability for ongoing bookkeeping support and would love to help bring balance back to your books.

It’s Christmas season... the tinsel is up, the wine's flowing and suddenly everyone’s asking if their “business Christmas vibes” are tax deductible. Spoiler alert, the ATO isn’t Santa 🎅🏻

Here’s what you can claim without getting coal in your stocking:
• Client gifts that aren’t entertainment – hampers, chocolates, wine, candles, vouchers (basically, things that don’t come with a free backstage pass).
• Small staff gifts under the minor benefits threshold - thoughtful, not “I sold a kidney for this gift”.
• Decorations for your workspace – nothing says festive like a sparkling spreadsheet.
• Donations made on behalf of your business – tax-deductible generosity, the only time giving money away might actually help your tax.

What you can’t claim, no matter how “businessy” you try to make it:
• Team Christmas lunches – sorry, even if your strategy was “bonding over the pavlova”.
• Entertainment gifts – concert tickets, escape rooms, llama rides, whatever you were thinking.
• Alcohol at events – yes, even the bubbles, and yes, even if you call it “client relationship management”.
• Costs for partners at staff functions – your partner is cute, the ATO doesn’t care.

GST reminder:
• Claim GST on deductible gifts.
• Entertainment? Nope. Not deductible. Even if Mariah Carey is belting out All I Want For Christmas.

Moral of the story: enjoy the festive season, spread the cheer, keep your receipts and remember… Santa handles the presents, the ATO handles the numbers.

December is here, which means it’s the perfect time to make sure your business finances are Christmas-ready. The end of the year gets busy quickly, so a little prep now can save a lot of stress later 🎁

Here’s what I recommend checking before the Christmas break:
• Reconcile all accounts so you’re up to date before things shut down.
• Make sure all receipts are uploaded, especially fuel, subscriptions, supplies and any Christmas-related purchases.
• Confirm payroll dates for December and early January, including any public holiday rate requirements.
• Double-check super has been processed if you’re paying it early before the break.
• Follow up overdue invoices so cash flow stays healthy over the quieter period.
• Process any bills or supplier payments that need to be finalised before your shutdown.

A Christmas-ready file means you start January organised, calm and ready for BAS rather than playing catch-up 🎅🏻

Christmas shutdown season is officially here and it’s a good time to make sure your team and your business are covered 🎄

If your business is planning to close over Christmas, here are the main things to keep in mind:
• You need to give your employees notice of the shutdown. The requirement for notice depends on the award or agreement they are under.
• Most awards require written notice, usually between 2 and 4 weeks.
• Employees can be asked to take annual leave during a shutdown period if their award or agreement allows it.
• If an employee doesn’t have enough leave, the award may allow them to take leave without pay, but the rules differ so it’s important to check.
• Make sure your payroll dates are set, including any early runs before the break.
• Review any public holidays that fall during the shutdown so staff are paid correctly.

If you’re not sure which rules apply to your team, it’s always worth checking the Fair Work website or speaking with your Bookkeeper to stay compliant.

December gets busy fast, so setting this up early helps keep everything running smoothly right through to the new year 🎅

Bookkeeping isn’t an expense, it’s an investment!

When your books are tidy, your reports are accurate. When your reports are accurate, your decisions are smarter. And when your decisions are smarter, your business grows.

But here’s the catch… catching up six months later always costs more.
More time. More stress. More money.

It’s never fun to play catch up, especially when it’s the ATO waiting on the other end. Keeping your Bookkeeping up to date doesn’t just save you money, it saves you headspace.

Good bookkeeping isn’t just about compliance, it’s the foundation of every successful business. Keeping your accounts consistent means fewer surprises and better clarity year round.

The end of the September BAS quarter is here, which means it’s time to get your books in order before the deadline hits.

Here’s your quick checklist to stay on top of things:

1️⃣ Reconcile your bank accounts — make sure everything matches.
2️⃣ Enter all invoices & bills — no receipts left behind.
3️⃣ Check payroll & superannuation — ensure staff are up to date.
4️⃣ Review GST coding — accuracy here avoids nasty surprises.
5️⃣ Organise receipts — digital or paper, keep them filed.
6️⃣ Back up your data & files — protect yourself against tech hiccups.

A little bit of preparation now saves a lot of stress later. Future you will thank you when it’s time to lodge!

💬 Which one of these do you always leave until the last minute?
