A simple framework for getting real insights out of your financial reports 📊

Most organisations treat financial reports as a record of the past, but they're actually a navigation tool for the future.

Here's the five-step framework our team uses:
1️⃣ The organisation tries things. Strategy gets implemented. Activities happen.
2️⃣ Finance measures and reports. Good reporting is a strategic scorecard, not just a P&L. It tracks the metrics that show whether you're executing on your goals.
3️⃣ Observe. Scan for what warrants attention: variances, trends, and anything shifting in the broader environment.
4️⃣ Analyse. This is the step a lot of people skip. Observation tells you what happened. Analysis asks why, and what's likely to happen next.
5️⃣ Decide. With that analysis, decision makers can determine what to start, stop or continue. Then the loop begins again.

If your monthly review consistently answers "why did this happen, and what will happen next?" you're already ahead of most.

We built a tool for allied health clinics that turns a handful of key metrics into a full P&L forecast!

This tool walks you through your clinic’s revenue, expenses and staffing costs to generate a P&L forecast tailored to allied health. Enter your current numbers and get a clear picture of where your practice is headed financially.

It doesn’t matter whether you run a small practice or a multi-disciplinary centre; this forecasting tool is built around the way allied health clinics operate.

Built by Slate Accounts, specialists in allied health bookkeeping and accounting 💪

Michael Kent was once a kindergarten treasurer. Even with a commercial and accounting background, he wasn't always sure what to do or where to start.

So in 2011, he wrote the guide he wished he'd had - a practical walkthrough of the treasurer role.

Since then, we've updated it regularly to reflect what's actually changed in the sector. The 2026 edition is now out and adds two new sections. One walks through building and checking your annual budget with AI. The other covers using AI for your monthly review and your reporting to committee (as a second set of eyes, not a replacement for your own judgement).

If you're on an ECEC committee, or know someone who is, it's worth a look.

Over 30 pages of practical guidance, now available here https://slateaccounts.com.au/childcare-kindergarten-treasurer-guide/

From 1 October 2026, Australian businesses can no longer add a surcharge to eftpos, Mastercard, Visa or American Express payments.

Your payment providers should switch the surcharge off, but check with each one what it is switching off and when. They will still charge you merchant fees.

For a retailer taking $600,000 a year by card with a 1.5% surcharge, that is $9,000 a year in lost revenue if nothing else changes.

A few points worth knowing:

🟢 The ban covers debit, prepaid and credit cards on those networks, in store, online and on invoices.
🟢 An invoice issued before 1 October but paid by card on or after that date cannot carry a surcharge.
🟢 You can still give a discount to customers who pay by direct debit, bank transfer or cash, but the card price must be the advertised price and the discount must be shown as a reduction from it.
🟢 Weekend and public holiday surcharges are unaffected where they apply however the customer pays.
🟢 Your merchant fees may fall. The RBA has cut the maximum fee a customer's bank can take on personal credit card sales from 0.8% to 0.3%. Ask your provider whether it will pass the saving on.

Your options are to raise prices, absorb the cost, discount other payment methods, stop taking cards on some channels such as invoices, or use a combination of these.
