Can I still process my clients' payroll, super and supplier payments without tripping the new AML/CTF rules?

That's been the #1 question from BAS Agents since the new AUSTRAC regime landed, and the recent updated guidance has finally given us a clear answer.

The good news: routine payment work from a client's own bank account β€” payroll, super, rent, regular suppliers β€” generally isn't "managing" client money, as long as you're following fixed client instructions rather than making the calls yourself.

The catch: the second you start deciding who gets paid, approving new suppliers, or resolving disputed invoices, you've crossed from administration into discretion. That's where the risk sits.

So we've built the toolkit for our members to keep you firmly on the right side of that line.

"We've navigated desktop software. We've navigated cloud accounting. We've adapted to changing regulations, changing client expectations and changing technology.

This is another chapter in that journey. The real question isn't whether change is coming. It's how we choose to respond to it,"

We sat down with Clayton Oates to chat about the opportunities and challenges AI presents, ahead of his session at The Bookkeeper Event 2026 in October on the Sunshine Coast.

The Federal Government has positioned its new Capital Gains Tax (CGT) reforms as a response to housing affordability pressures and concerns about fairness between generations.

However, the changes extend beyond residential property to shares, business assets and startup investments. For many entrepreneurs, this has raised alarm bells.

For Australian Bookkeepers Network (ABN) members, this isn't an abstract tax debate. It affects the conversations they're having with business owners every day about growth, investment, succession planning and long-term wealth creation.

Critics argue that while the reforms are being sold as a housing measure, they may also reduce the incentives that encourage Australians to start businesses, back innovation and take entrepreneurial risks.

Before you "switch off" for the weekend, make sure you bookmark our Accountants Pack to use on Monday!

One of the most common complaints levelled at accountants by bookkeepers, is the duplication of work performed by an accountant where in many instances this may have already been done by a bookkeeper.

The Accountant Pack is an Excel based spreadsheet that operates via a range of worksheets, links and colour coding to guide the accountant through a number of key areas that you as the bookkeeper either have or have not considered.

It's a great tool to use at EOFY, and is one of the many resources our ABN Members have access to. If you're an exisiting ABN member, you can head to https://austbook.net/end-of-financial-year-resources to find the Accountants Pack, and all your other ready to use EOFY tools and resources.

For decades, Clayton Oates has helped bookkeepers navigate industry change. Today, no topic is generating more discussion than artificial intelligence. While AI promises new efficiencies, many bookkeepers remain uncertain about what it means for their future.

Clayton will soon take the stage at The Bookkeeper Event 2026 on the Sunshine Coast in October. Ahead of his presentation, we spoke with Clayton about the opportunities and challenges AI presents. We also explored why the bookkeepers who will most likely to thrive may be those who lean into the very qualities technology can never replace, being their human insight, judgement, and relationships.
