"You've got to be awake and alert every minute, every stride, because you're working with something alive that thinks and feels. He makes decisions. If we're not there to help him, he may make a decision we don't want him to make. Then we blame it on the horse. But, I grant you, it's not the horse's fault." - Ray Hunt

A Mighty Girl Pick of the Day: “What To Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Anxiety” by Dawn Huebner. It's an anxious time for many people and children are not immune to such worries especially when their parents are feeling stressed. All children worry, but some kids begin to feel like captives of their fears, seeking reassurance over and over again or avoiding situations that cause anxiety at all costs. This interactive self-help book provides anxious kids with tools and techniques to identify and manage their own anxiety, so they can feel ready to take on the world! Huebner, a clinical psychologist, uses age-appropriate language to introduce cognitive-behavioral techniques to manage fear and worry, and gives parents tools to help their children face their fears and feel in control.

Encouraging and positive, this book helps kids identify the line between regular worries and anxiety that has begun to affect their life in a negative way. Techniques like a designated “worry time” with a parent help kids spend less time on their worries, while “talking back to your worries” teaches kids to counter their fears with positive thoughts. Blank pages provide opportunities for kids to draw, write, and otherwise explore their feelings, so that they can feel empowered to take control of them. Highly recommended for ages 7 to 12.
