💡 Tax Tip: Medical Expenses & Medical Travel

Did you know you may be able to claim eligible medical expenses on your Canadian personal tax return? This can include costs such as prescription medications, dental care, vision care, and certain medical treatments that were not reimbursed.

🚗 Medical Travel:
If you need to travel 40 km or more (one way) to access medical services not available in your community, you may be able to claim transportation costs. If the distance is 80 km or more, meals and accommodation may also qualify.

🌲 For Northern Residents:
If you live in a prescribed northern area, medical travel may also be claimed under the Northern Residents Deduction (Form T2222) when you must travel outside your community for medical care that isn’t available locally.

Keeping receipts and travel records can help ensure you maximize your claim.

🎓 Did you know students can transfer tuition tax credits to their parents?

If a student does not need all of their tuition tax credits to reduce their own taxes, they may be able to transfer up to $5,000 of unused tuition credits per year to a parent, grandparent, spouse, or common-law partner.

💡 What this means:
• Students still keep the rest of their unused credits for future years
• Parents may be able to reduce their taxes payable

This is a common credit that many families overlook during tax season.

If you or your child attended post-secondary school and you’re not sure how to maximize your tuition credits, feel free to reach out.

Northern Residents Deduction – Don’t Miss Out

If you live in a prescribed northern zone (like Fort McMurray and other eligible communities), you may qualify for the Northern Residents Deduction.

There are two main parts:

1️⃣ Residency Deduction
You may claim a daily amount if you lived in a prescribed northern or intermediate zone for at least 6 consecutive months during the year.

2️⃣ Travel Deduction
You may be able to deduct eligible travel expenses for:
• Vacation trips (up to 2 per year per eligible family member), and/or
• Medical travel trips

Limits apply, and the deduction is generally based on the lowest return airfare to the nearest designated city, even if you drove.

Proper documentation is important, keep receipts and employer benefit details.

🛒 New Canada Grocery & Essentials Benefit (Enhanced GST/HST Credit)

The federal government has enhanced the GST/HST Credit under the new Canada Grocery & Essentials Benefit to help Canadians manage rising food and household costs.

What’s enhanced?
✔️ Increased support for eligible individuals and families
✔️ Extra relief targeted at low and modest-income households
✔️ Designed to offset higher grocery and essential living expenses

💡 Here’s the key:
You must file your income tax return to receive your GST/HST payments, even if you have little or no income.

If you don’t file, you don’t get paid.

Filing ensures:
• You’re automatically assessed for the enhanced benefit
• You maximize the GST/HST amounts you’re entitled to
• You keep more money in your pocket

Tax season isn’t just about refunds, it’s about accessing the benefits available to you.

A quick reminder as we head into tax season:
Contributions made to your RRSP by March 2, 2026 can be deducted on your 2025 tax return.

RRSPs are a great way to reduce taxable income while building long-term savings. If you’re unsure how much to contribute or how it fits into your overall tax plan, now’s a good time to review your options.
