One of the biggest things I see in my profession is people jumping into self employment for the wrong reasons usually thinking they’ll make more money or have more time with family. The reality though is that it’s not for everyone.

Self-employment is often more demanding than a 9–5. If you don’t work, you don’t get paid. Time off means no income. You’re responsible for your own benefits, your own structure, and staying disciplined with your finances.

A few areas that tend to catch people off guard:

HST (Sales Tax)
This money isn’t yours as it belongs to the government. You’re simply collecting it. Many are shocked at what they owe at year-end because they’ve spent it. Stay organized and set it aside regularly so it’s there when you need it.

CPP Contributions
As a self-employed individual, you pay both the employee and employer portions which are currently 11.9% of your income, up to a maximum (just under $8,500). This is often overlooked.

Income Tax
No taxes are automatically deducted, so it’s up to you to plan ahead. Setting aside 25–30% of your income is a solid approach to avoid surprises at tax time.

All that said, self-employment has been incredibly good to me, and I have no regrets. It’s given me opportunities, flexibility, and growth I wouldn’t trade but that comes from understanding how to manage it properly.

Before making the leap, talk to a professional, ask questions, and make sure you’re fully informed. It can make all the difference. If you have questions I am here !

What a season !!

I just want to take this opportunity to thank you all for making this tax season a success.
For the first time ever I was not stressed on April 30 . I was able to get everyone in on time and even a few that sent me their stuff in the past few days.

I found everyone was a lot more organized this year and if they weren’t they listened to what was required and got it done quickly. This made everything go smoothly and does not go unnoticed!

Thank you all for the generous gifts again .
Flowers, chocolates, books, keepsakes, gift cards, moose sausages, wine and even fresh crab from BC waters !! It’s all so amazing and so appreciated !

I will be taking a few days off to rest and recoup . If you have not yet filed I would be happy to help you and I’ll be back at it next week .

Tax season deadline - complete !

Melissa ❤️

Hello everyone !!

I’m down to the wire . 2 more days until deadline and I’m working unbelievably hard to get you all taken care of .
Those that are emailing me today please take note I will not be able to get them done on time . Waiting to the last minute puts a lot of added stress on me but I will definitely take care of you regardless .

Please note May 1 I will be taking some time off to recoup and recover from the long intense hours and workload the last 3 months brought on . I will then be back to regular work hours . Monday to Friday 9-5.

*please make arrangements to pick up your files this week or next at the latest ! I don’t have room to store .

Thank you all so much for being awesome!

Melissa

As this tax season wraps up, I just want to take a moment to say thank you ❤️

To all of my clients who continue to trust me with your taxes year after year, I truly appreciate your loyalty and confidence in me. It means more than you know.
And to all of my new clients this year, welcome! I’m so grateful you chose me, and I look forward to working with you for years to come.

I also want to acknowledge the kindness and thoughtfulness so many of you have shown, from coffee gift cards, beautiful flowers, and meaningful books, to the generous tips. None of it is ever expected, but it is genuinely appreciated and never goes unnoticed. You all made me feel incredibly special this season.

Thank you again for your continued support. I couldn’t do this without you!

Hello everyone! We are reaching the finish line with less than 2 weeks left until the April 30th deadline. A friendly reminder to everyone who has not yet filed to make sure I have it by this coming Wednesday. If it's submitted to me after that date, there will be no guarantee that I'll be able to get it done in time for the deadline.

I'm working extremely long hours. Coffee is my fuel and lifeline these days.
I ask you to please refrain from asking me any questions that do not pertain to your 2025 taxes until things slow down a bit.

I want to say a big thank you to each and every one of you for putting your trust into me each year to help take the stress of taxes off of you .
I try to make things as easy as possible and take the time to answer all questions and educate you all as best as possible . I truly am honoured to be the person you all reach out to . I’m truly blessed .

And last but not least - send me all your positive vibes to get through the last couple weeks of extremely long hours.

I appreciate you all ..

Melissa ❤️

Happy last month of tax season! It’s been a non stop busy one and I’m still going strong .
Just letting everyone know I am not accepting new clients for this April 30th deadline .

Also deadline for current clients to be guaranteed in on time is April 20 th .
Anyone that gets things in to me past that date will not be guaranteed by end of month .

Remember that it’s extremely busy so please save your questions for when I am working on you.

Melissa :)

Attention

Just a quick note and friendly reminder on a few things. This may not apply to everyone, but I do need to mention it.

When you book a time to drop off or pick up your documents, please try to arrive at that scheduled time. Showing up early without checking first, or running late because of other stops, can affect other clients or the small breaks I have during the day. I’m working with a high volume of clients, so staying on schedule really helps keep things moving smoothly.

Also, please let me know ahead of time when you’d like to drop off or pick up. I’ve had quite a few people stopping by without notice, and it pulls me away from getting work done for everyone.

For communication after hours, email only please. I’m working long days during tax season, and the late-night messages are starting to catch up with me. I need that time to recharge so I can stay on top of everything.

Lastly, payment is due when your taxes are completed. Not on payday or at a later time. Tax season moves quickly, and I’m not able to follow up on payments. I may work from home, but this is still my business, and I need these boundaries respected.

Thanks so much for your understanding and cooperation. It really helps me continue to take care of everyone as efficiently as possible.
