Bookkeeper secrets your bank statement has been keeping from you 👀

Honestly, this is one of my favourite parts of my job, going through a new client’s books and finding things they had no idea were even there.

Not because it’s bad news. Because fixing it puts real money back in their pocket.

Here’s what I find almost every single time:

Subscriptions nobody’s used in months. Duplicate charges that slipped right through. Bank fees that have just become background noise. Stripe and PayPal fees dumped into the wrong category. A personal expense or two buried in the business account. Payments that show up every month and nobody knows what they’re even for.

None of it is your fault. You’re running a business, you don’t have time to comb through every line of your bank statement. That’s exactly what I do.

And more often than not, finding these things saves my clients more than they ever expected.

Hiring a bookkeeper? Here’s exactly what I’d do first, and I’m a bookkeeper saying this!

1. Get clear on what you actually need.
Catch-up bookkeeping? Monthly maintenance? GST filing? Knowing this before you reach out saves everyone time.

2. Ask if they specialize in small businesses.
Not all bookkeepers are built the same. You want someone who gets what it’s like to run a small business, not just someone who knows the software.

3. Check that they’re certified.
Look for a CPB (Certified Professional Bookkeeper) designation. It matters more than most people realize.

4. Ask how they communicate.
Will they check in monthly? How do they send reports? Do they explain things in plain English or drown you in jargon? This one’s big.

5. Make sure they know your software.
QuickBooks, Wave, Xero - whoever you hire should be fluent in whatever you’re using or want to use.

6. Ask what they need from you.
A good bookkeeper will tell you upfront what they need to do their job well. If they don’t ask for anything, that’s a red flag.

7. Don’t just go with the cheapest option.
Your books are the foundation of your business. This is not the place to cut corners.

Bookkeeping myths that are quietly hurting your business 👇

Myth 1: “I only need a bookkeeper at tax time.”
By then the damage is already done. Bookkeeping is a year-round thing.

Myth 2: “My business is too small.”
No such thing. If money is moving in and out, your books need to be clean.

Myth 3: “I can just do it myself in a spreadsheet.”
You can, until you can’t. And usually you find out at the worst possible time.

Myth 4: “My accountant handles my bookkeeping.”
Your accountant files your taxes. Your bookkeeper keeps your records clean all year. Very different jobs.

Myth 5: “Shoebox receipts are fine.”
They are not fine. They have never been fine. 😭

Myth 6: "l’ll catch up on my books when things slow down."”Things don't slow down. And now you’re 6 months behind.

Myth 7: "I can write off everything."
you cannot. And the CRA will find out.

Myth 8: "Clean books are just for big businesses."

Clean books are how small businesses become big businesses.
