Moving countries while equity is vesting can create tax in more than one place.

Did you know
If you received stock options, RSUs, or other equity compensation while working in Canada and then move to the US before exercise, vesting, or sale, the income may need to be analyzed across both countries.

What it means for you
This is where high-income employees and executives often get caught because the equity was granted in one country, but the taxable event happens in another. The tax system does not always follow where you live on the day of sale or vesting alone. It may also look at:
β€’ when the award was earned
β€’ where you worked during the vesting or service period
β€’ and how each country characterizes the event
That means one equity event can create:
β€’ dual-country tax exposure
β€’ timing mismatches
β€’ withholding confusion
β€’ and double-taxation risk if the reporting is not coordinated properly
This is one of the most technical parts of a move because the paperwork often looks like β€œemployment income,” but the sourcing and timing are much more complicated.

A family home is not always fully exempt just because you lived in it.

Did you know
A home is not always fully exempt just because you lived in it. Owning multiple properties, renting part of the home, frequent flipping activity, or failing to report the sale can all affect how the principal residence exemption works.

What it means for you
This is where homeowners get overconfident. The exemption is broad, but it depends heavily on facts. If you own more than one property, only one can generally be designated for a given year. If part of the home was used for rental purposes, the exemption may not apply cleanly across the whole gain. If buying and selling starts to look like a business pattern, the gain can be characterized differently altogether. And even where the gain is exempt, the sale still has to be reported. That means the real risk is not just tax β€” it is assuming the exemption applies perfectly without checking whether the facts support it.

The 83(b) Election Is a 30-Day Decision With Long-Term Consequences

Did you know
An 83(b) election generally must be filed within 30 days of receiving qualifying equity. Miss the deadline, and the opportunity is usually gone.

What it means for you
This is one of the highest-impact early tax decisions a founder or employee can make when receiving equity subject to vesting. Filing the election can mean paying tax upfront when the equity value is still low, which can be highly efficient if the company’s value increases later. But that also means you are making a tax decision before the business outcome is known. If the company does not perform, you may have paid tax on value that never materializes. If you wait too long, the planning opportunity disappears and later vesting can create a very different β€” and often more expensive β€” tax result. That is why this is not just paperwork. It is an early-stage strategy decision that forces a view on future upside versus current risk.

Tax Chronicles | Season 1
Worldview Wednesday 🌎

A home sale that feels tax-free in Canada can still become a US tax issue after you move.

Did you know
Selling a former Canadian principal residence after becoming a US tax resident does not always produce the same tax result in both countries.

What it means for you
This is one of the most overlooked move-year and post-move traps. A lot of Canadians assume that if the home was their principal residence in Canada, the sale will remain simple no matter when it happens. But once you are a US tax resident, the sale may have to be analyzed through a US lens as well. That can create a cross-border mismatch where the property feels straightforward in Canada, but the US side still needs its own reporting, cost basis analysis, exchange-rate treatment, and timing review.
The biggest mistake is assuming the Canadian answer automatically becomes the US answer.
This becomes especially important if:
β€’ the property was sold after the move rather than before it
β€’ part of the gain relates to periods after Canadian departure
β€’ or the property changed use before the sale

A tax-free home sale can still create penalties if you fail to report it properly.

Did you know
The sale of a principal residence still has to be reported on your tax return, even when the full gain is expected to be exempt.

What it means for you
This is one of the most common Canadian tax misunderstandings among homeowners. A lot of people assume that if no tax is payable, there is nothing to disclose. That is not how the CRA treats it. If the sale is not properly reported, the issue is no longer whether the gain was exempt β€” the problem becomes compliance. That can lead to penalties, unnecessary correspondence, and in more serious situations, risk around preserving the exemption properly.

Interest Expense Is Real β€” but the Tax Deduction May Still Be Limited

Did you know
Business interest deductions can be limited, and your draft specifically notes a 30% limitation tied to income. That means not all interest expense may reduce taxable income in the current year.

What it means for you
This is especially important for businesses that rely on debt, owner financing, or leverage to grow. A lot of founders assume that if interest is a legitimate business expense, it will automatically be deductible. That is not always true. In lower-income years or in structures where leverage is more aggressive, part of the interest expense may be deferred instead of reducing current tax. The business still pays the cost in cash, but the tax benefit may not arrive when expected. That creates a gap between real economic expense and current-year tax relief, which can distort planning if the financing model is not reviewed carefully.

Buying or renting a home in the US helps your move β€” but it does not automatically solve your Canadian tax residency position.

Did you know
Buying a home in the US supports your relocation, but it does not automatically prove that your Canadian tax residency has ended.

What it means for you
A lot of Canadians assume that once they establish a home in the US, the departure question is essentially settled. In practice, a US home is only one piece of the residency analysis.
The CRA looks at your overall ties, including:
β€’ where your family is
β€’ whether you still own or maintain property in Canada
β€’ your lifestyle connections
β€’ your ongoing personal and economic ties
If strong ties to Canada remain, the US home alone may not be enough to support a non-resident position.
That’s where people get caught β€” they did something meaningful in the US, but not enough changed in Canada.

Foreign Asset Reporting Can Apply Even When the Assets Produce No Income

You can trigger T1135 reporting even if your foreign assets earned little or nothing.

Did you know
A Canadian resident may have to file Form T1135 when the total cost amount of specified foreign property exceeds $100,000, even if those assets generated little or no income during the year.

What it means for you
This is a reporting trap, not an income trap β€” and that is why it gets missed. A lot of taxpayers assume foreign reporting only matters if the asset performed well, paid income, or was sold. That is not the key issue here. The filing obligation is tied to the cost amount of specified foreign property, not to whether the asset made money. It can catch people with foreign brokerage holdings, non-Canadian shares, overseas bank accounts, or foreign rental property who do not think of themselves as having a β€œforeign reporting” profile. The tax mistake is often not underreporting income β€” it is missing the form altogether.

Taking Profits Out of the Business Is a Strategy Decision, Not Just a Tax Decision

Did you know
Whether profits are retained in the business or distributed to the owner affects tax, cash flow, reinvestment capacity, and long-term flexibility β€” not just how much money comes out this year.

What it means for you
A lot of founders think of distributions primarily as a personal cash decision: β€œhow much can I take out?” But from a tax and strategic perspective, that is often too narrow. Taking profit out immediately may increase personal tax exposure and reduce the capital left inside the business for hiring, expansion, debt reduction, or future transactions. On the other hand, retaining too much can create inefficiencies depending on the structure and the owner’s broader goals. The real issue is that profit extraction affects far more than current-year tax β€” it can also shape business valuation, financing flexibility, and how well the company is positioned for future opportunities.
