This month, my wife and I celebrated 7 years of marriage. I've been reflecting on what's created the real wealth in our relationship - especially after a friend of ours recently got engaged and asked for advice.
We do a lot of things to keep our marriage strong, but I wanted to share our top three:
1. Marriage isn't 50/50 - it's 100%
Sometimes that looks like 60/40, sometimes 90/10. The key is never keeping score. You're building something together, and some days require one partner to carry more weight. What matters is that both people are committed to giving their all.
2. Never go to bed angry
We resolve conflicts the same day they arise. Even if it means staying up late talking through something difficult. Every night ends with "I love you" and a kiss goodnight. This rule has saved us from letting small issues become big resentments.
3. Pray together
For us, praying together has been one of the most intimate things we do as a couple. It keeps us aligned on what truly matters and reminds us we're partners in something bigger than ourselves.
If prayer isn't part of your tradition, the principle still applies: share something meaningful that transcends daily concerns - whether that's meditation, reading together, discussing your deeper values, or simply talking about your hopes for your family's future.
I spend my days helping people build financial wealth. But I'm convinced that relational wealth and spiritual wealth matter more.
What relationship advice would you add?
