🇨🇦 $150 CANADA DISABILITY BENEFIT SUPPLEMENTAL PAYMENT

New Canada Disability Benefit regulations take effect today, September 1, 2026.

Starting this fall, eligible recipients may receive a ONE-TIME $150 lump-sum supplemental payment.

The payment is intended to help offset the cost of obtaining the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).

A few important things to know:

➡️ The supplemental amount is fixed at $150.

➡️ You do NOT need to apply separately for the $150 payment if you qualify.

➡️ Some people who received a Canada Disability Benefit payment before September 1 may still be eligible even if they are no longer receiving regular CDB payments.

➡️ This is a supplemental payment — it is not replacing the regular Canada Disability Benefit.

IMPORTANT: The government has not yet announced an exact payment date. Canada.ca says more information about when to expect the payment will be available soon.

Do you know someone receiving the Canada Disability Benefit who should know about this? Please share this with them.

🚨A major financial fraud investigation in Calgary has led to criminal charges against a 49-year-old man accused of allegedly diverting more than $164 million in investor money in what the RCMP describe as a large-scale Ponzi scheme.

Police say Craig Michael Thompson, who operated through his company Black Box Management, allegedly collected money from more than 1,000 investors between March 2020 and April 2024.

According to the RCMP, Thompson presented himself as a one-person investment firm and told clients their money would be used for day trading. Investors allegedly received weekly email updates claiming their accounts were growing and performing well.

Investigators say they later discovered that information contained in those updates was allegedly copied from online sources.

The RCMP allege that of approximately $164 million received from investors, more than $163 million was transferred to external accounts, including Thompson’s personal trading account and an investment in a U.S.-based company.

Police also say the investigation has identified links to other businesses, including Intelsense Investment Corp., Invader Management Ltd., and Attebyte Investment Corp.

Thompson was arrested on July 31 by the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated Market Enforcement Team. He faces charges related to fraud and laundering proceeds of crime.

This is not Thompson’s first securities-related case. Last summer, the Alberta Securities Commission convicted him of securities fraud and ordered him to pay $8.8 million in penalties and costs over an alleged Ponzi scheme.

His lawyer told CBC News that neither he nor his client had any comment on the new criminal charges.

Thompson is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on September 3.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: The allegations have not been proven in criminal court, and Thompson has not been convicted of the current charges.

The RCMP are asking anyone who believes they may have been affected by the alleged scheme to contact police.

🏠 ONTARIO RENTERS & LANDLORDS: IMPORTANT CHANGES START SEPTEMBER 21

Several changes to Ontario’s Residential Tenancies Act take effect September 21, 2026 — and both renters and landlords should know what’s changing.

Here are some of the biggest changes:

➡️ NON-PAYMENT OF RENT
A landlord will be able to give a notice of termination with a termination date as early as 7 days after the notice is given.

IMPORTANT: This does NOT mean a tenant is automatically evicted in 7 days. The Landlord and Tenant Board process still applies, and the tenant can avoid termination by paying the required rent before the applicable deadline.

➡️ REPEATED LATE RENT
Ontario is introducing a clearer benchmark for persistent late payment.

Rent that is more than 7 days late on at least 3 occasions within any 6-month period can qualify as persistent late payment.

The regulation also makes clear that other circumstances may still qualify.

➡️ RENT-ARREARS HEARINGS
In certain eviction hearings for rent arrears, a tenant who wants to raise their own issues against the landlord will generally need to pay half of the rent arrears claimed in the application.

That payment must generally be made no later than 7 days before the hearing.

➡️ RENOVICTION PROTECTIONS
Tenants who have properly exercised their right to return after renovations will receive additional notification protections.

Once the unit is ready for occupancy, the landlord must give an eligible former tenant at least 60 days to exercise their right to return.

➡️ LANDLORD OWN-USE EVICTIONS
There is also a new 60-day rule involving landlord own-use evictions.

If the person named in the notice does not occupy the rental unit within the prescribed 60-day period, it can create a presumption that the eviction was made in bad faith — unless evidence proves otherwise.

There are changes here that affect BOTH sides of the rental relationship, so I strongly recommend renters and landlords read the official Ontario information rather than relying only on social-media summaries.

Were you aware these changes were coming September 21?
