The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB), starting in spring 2026, provides tax-free, one-time, and ongoing, quarterly payments to over 12 million low- and modest-income Canadians to help with rising costs. This enhanced GST/HST credit offers a 50% one-time top-up in 2026, followed by a 25% increase for five years starting July 2026.

Key Details of the Program:
Payment Structure: A one-time payment (by June 2026) followed by enhanced, indexed quarterly payments.

Target Audience: Low- and modest-income individuals and families, specifically aimed at those already receiving the GST/HST credit.

Amount Estimates (2026-27): A family of four could receive up to $1,890 this year (roughly $1,400 annually thereafter), while a single person could get up to $950 this year (roughly $700 annually thereafter).

Usage: The funds are not restricted to groceries; they can be used for any essentials, including rent, transit, or health expenses.

Eligibility: Determined automatically by the Canada Revenue Agency based on the previous year's tax return; no separate application is required.

This benefit is part of a broader federal strategy to tackle food insecurity, which also includes strengthening supply chains, supporting domestic food producers through tax changes, and implementing unit price labeling.

Tax season is officially on the clock!🧾

Here are some tips to help you prepare for tax season:
- Sort out receipts and expenses (especially if you have a business); and categorize it.
- March 2, 2026 is the deadline for contributing to your RRSP for the 2025 tax year.
- Log in to your CRA My Account to ensure you remember your password. Re-setting the password can be a pain and it's best to avoid the long wait time if you do it early.

Tax season is officially on the clock, with the CRA confirming it will start accepting 2025 tax returns on February 23, 2026. Canadians who file online and use direct deposit could see refunds arrive in as little as two weeks. The CRA is urging people to prepare now by logging into their CRA My Account, updating personal information, and making sure sign-in details still work.

Starting February, all users will also need a backup multi-factor authentication method to access their accounts. Paper filers should expect much longer waits, with processing times closer to eight weeks. For Toronto residents counting on a refund to offset high living costs, filing early could mean faster cash back.
