Hi Everyone! It's been a while since I've posted anything on my page. I have been spending my spare time helping to finalize my website and rebranding my business (as you may have noticed!)

In 2023 I had to set up my business quickly and I didn't have a lot of time to think about branding. Luckily, after my first year, I knew exactly where I wanted to go with it! I was able to see the types of clients I was connecting with and why. I realized that clients are looking for a different experience and this was why I had gained so much momentum with word of mouth referrals. Clients don't want to dread going to see their accountant. They want a friendly, warm encounter, and someone they can relate to... All while knowing their accounting and taxes are being taken care of.

I really tried to portray that in my website and I'd love for you to check it out! And if you're interested, there is more to my new logo and name than just a simple half box around an A! Happy to share how that came together and what it means to me!

Meet Erin! This month we are officially celebrating one year (how!!?) of working together behind the scenes to get this business going! We are celebrating by taking the afternoon off for a visit to Azure Spa and out for lunch!

This year has been busy to say the least, and Erin has been by my side every step of the way. From testing out tax programs to setting up our templates, she's helped with it all! She's been one of my biggest supporters and has helped me in so many ways.

I'm thankful for Erin's knack for tech and ability to problem solve and pick up new tasks quickly. We have so much fun everyday! A big thank you to her.

If any of the below bullet points apply to you in your business check out how we can help!

Maybe your new business has been busier than expected this year to date and you're dreading that box of receipts. Maybe you've lost a staff member and your books are behind, or perhaps you just want to be better prepared going into 2025... This fall is a great time to get organized in preparation for the upcoming tax season!

If you're behind on your books - this is a judgement free zone! Doesn't matter how you got into the situation you're in, I'm happy to help get you back on track. Trust me, I've seen it all.

I have a handful of spots currently available this fall to onboard new monthly bookkeeping clients and also for one time accounting program set ups or cleanups. Once things ramp up in January/February it will likely be too late for this year! Happy to schedule a free intro meeting to see if we would be a good fit for your business.

School's out for the summer!!

I'm so grateful to be able to spend a ton of time this summer with these two sweet little souls! ❤️ Over the summer months I'll still be working part-time but I might not be able to reply as quickly as usual.

The last couple years have been such a good reminder about what is really important - spending time with your family and raising these little ones.

If you've been contemplating starting your own business but worried about the back end or the admin side of things, I'd be happy to chat and share my story. This last year hasn't been easy (moving homes, balancing a newborn schedule, late nights, client meetings and deadlines), but at the same time it has been amazing. I also know having the flexibility to be there "for it all" in the years ahead makes it totally worth it!

And common... aren't they adorable??

Employee or subcontractor? This post applies to you if you are either the person hiring or being hired! This is a very common question that I've been asked over the years. It's not as straight forward as an agreement between the two parties. CRA does look at these relationships as the tax liability and required source deductions are different in either situation. Misclassifying workers intentionally to avoid taxes can lead to fines and penalties.

What is the difference?

An employee would be someone you hire to work specified hours at a certain rate. They will use your equipment and your programs to complete the work you require of them. You will be responsible for training this person with the hope they will be with your business for the long term.

A subcontractor is someone hired to get a specific job done under their own conditions. They typically have a specific area of expertise and would not require much training. Because you have less control over their work, you have less responsibility for them. This means you aren't required to provide them with any benefits, vacation time, equipment or remit taxes to the government on their behalf. They are a business owner themselves and will handle all of that on their own end.

You will want to make this decision wisely! Sometimes it is not easy to distinguish this relationship and it's a good idea to fully understand the criteria CRA uses to make their assessment!

As I'm slowly coming out of hibernation post tax season, I plan to start posting some business tips and answers to some frequently asked questions!

I've been meeting with a lot of new clients lately and it has made me realize how important it is to gauge your compatibility with the person your looking to hire! Knowing the right questions to ask when hiring an accountant can make all the difference in resting assured that your financial needs are being taken care in a way that is important to you. Well there is technically no right answer to these questions it's important to be aware of the level of service you'll be signing up for!

Here are 10 questions to ask in addition to "how much do you charge?" before you sign up with a new accountant. These questions may also help you analyze the current relationship you have:

1. Does the level of support and scope of work available align with my financial goals?
Are you looking for data entry only, or are you looking for financial analysis and insight?

2. What are your qualifications?
Do you need someone with ample qualifications or just good attention to detail? Do you need business advice and help understanding your financials? Or just data entry?

3. What is your experience in my industry?
Every industry has a learning curve and it helps when your accountant is already knowledgeable in your industry or can catch on quickly. A list of references or similar types of businesses they service may help.

4. What is your preferred method of communication?
If you like to talk everything out over the phone, but you accountant only likes to communicate via email, they might not be a good fit for you! You want to find someone with the same communication style as you.

5. Who will actually be working on my file?
If you're looking at a larger firm the initial person you speak to likely will not be the person completing your work. You will want to know who you will be working with before making your decision so you can gauge your expectations and decide if they will be a good fit for you.

6. What are your typical response times?
Sometimes you will have a quick question and a quick response is a life saver! You will want to know about expected wait times for a reply to your emails/phone calls.

7. What are your typical delivery times?
Whether you're looking for year end financial statement preparation or regular bookkeeping, its important to set expectations for turn around times on your engagements. You need timely financial data in order to make informed decisions about your business.

8. Do you have the capacity to take me on as a client?
It's important to find an accountant that prioritizes the client experience and will not overbook themselves just to increase their bottom line.

9. How will you protect my information?
You need to be able to trust your accountant has a plan to keep your information secure and that you are confident in their commitment to following this plan.

10. What accounting programs do you use and will I have timely access to my information?
You want to make sure that in any situation you will still have access to your books and records and can access them at any time. You don't want to have to wait around for a financial report or for access to your current books and records.
