Honest question for ya…

Who are you when the job title goes quiet?

We spent our lives being told not to care about labels… then slowly became very attached to the one on our business card.

So as retirement starts creeping into the conversation, identity gets a little uncomfortable.

No meetings.
No inbox.
No “so what do you do?” elevator answer.

Is retirement about stepping away—or finally stepping into the parts of ourselves that never fit between 9 and 5?

The side projects,
the curiosities,
the mixtape brain that’s always been running in the background?

I’m starting to think identity doesn’t disappear when work ends. It just loses the corporate filter.

Curious how others are thinking about this.

Does retirement feel like an ending… or a reset?

Gen X grew up on The A‑Team.

Four very different guys.
A lot of scars.
A plan that never looked perfect—until it worked.

That’s retirement for our generation.

We didn’t get smooth career paths or lifelong pensions handed to us.

We adapted.
We improvised.
We figured things out with duct tape and instinct.

Retirement isn’t about disappearing at 65—it’s about assembling your team:

—> savings, flexibility, purpose, and a plan that actually fits your life.

And remember:

Canadians love mutual funds—61% of us invest in them.

Unfortunately, they’re also the Blockbuster Video of investing: nostalgic, convenient… and famous for (late) fees.

The average mutual fund investment management fee in Canada?

2.31%.

The portfolios I build for clients?

0.40%.

That difference compounds faster than a Friday night late return of Jurassic Park in 1997.

If you’re still paying “Be Kind, Rewind” pricing on your investments, it might be time to upgrade to streaming‑era fees.

Just the other day I helped a couple save over $130,000.00 in fees over the next 15 years allowing them to retire 3 years sooner.

I learned to sail when I was 11 at a Summer Sports Camp.

Sometimes the calm you’re chasing isn’t a destination—it’s a trim.

Life can feel like open water:

✅deadlines gusting out of nowhere

🔔notifications slapping the hull

😬your mind doing that Gen X “I can handle it” thing… right up until the wind shifts again.

But sailing teaches a quieter truth: you don’t fight the breeze—you read it.

You loosen what’s too tight, you pull in what’s slack, and you set a course that matches the conditions you’re actually in.

When the chop picks up, you don’t panic.

You check your lines.

You steady your breathing.

You pick a point on the horizon and keep showing up for the next small adjustment.

That’s where calm lives—in the practice, not the perfection.

And yeah, some days you’ve got to channel a little Kriss Kross energy and jump—not into chaos, but out of the noise.

Step off the mental dock.

Let the wind do some of the work.

Re-trim.

Re-center.

Keep moving.

Calm isn’t the absence of weather.

It’s learning how to sail through it.

Often when I’m coaching to clients to early retirement, the first thing we dive into is what’s holding them back.

So my question for you is….

“Which lines are you holding too tight—and what would happen if you eased them?” 🤔

🎯 Retirement is a bullseye most people never actually aim at.

We circle the target for decades—working, saving, hoping—but rarely stop to define the center. 🤔

The bullseye isn’t an age or a number; it’s clarity. It’s knowing what a good life looks like when the noise fades.

Most people hit the outer rings by accident. A few hit the middle with intention.

The real test is whether you’ve taken the time to draw your target at all.

Have you?

61% of Canadians🍁fear they'll outlive their savings. But here's the bigger problem…

Most GenX have no idea what's actually holding them back from early retirement.

Not because they're broke.

Because no one has shown them their biggest gap.

So I built something simple.

A free 3-minute Early Retirement Gap Assessment that shows:

🎯 Which area is costing you years of freedom
🎯 Your biggest obstacle to retiring sooner
🎯 What's really keeping you stuck
🎯 Whether early retirement is actually feasible

No spreadsheets.
No advisor meetings.
No sales pitch.

Just clarity on what to fix first.
