Thank you, Jasmine Brar for City Councillor, Waverley West, for taking the time to meet and engage in a productive conversation about the future of public safety in Winnipeg.
We appreciate your commitment to the priorities outlined in our 10-Point Public Safety Commitment and your demonstrated willingness to work collaboratively toward meaningful solutions.
While our endorsement of Nafyia Naso in Waverley West remains unchanged, we are committed to building positive, productive relationships with all candidates and elected officials, regardless of the election outcome.
Our commitment has always been to Winnipegβs firefighters and firefighter-paramedics, and most importantly, the people and communities we have proudly served since 1882.
Elections come and go. The relationships we build, the trust we earn, and our shared responsibility to public safety must endure well beyond October 28.
STANDING WITH WINNIPEG'S FIREFIGHTERS! π
I had an incredibly productive meeting with Nick Kasper, President of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg, L867(UFFW), to discuss the future of public safety, the challenges facing our first responders, and the investments needed to keep Winnipeg safe.
Our firefighters and firefighter-paramedics are being stretched to their limits. As our city continues to grow, we need to ensure our emergency services have the staffing, equipment, resources, and long-term planning necessary to keep pace.
I'm proud to support the priorities outlined in the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg's 10-Point Public Safety Commitment:
- Restore Frontline Staffing: Increase staffing toward the recommended 1.35 ratio, reduce costly overtime, and build a sustainable workforce.
- Modernize Emergency Response Standards: Establish measurable response-time objectives and update emergency service standards to reflect Winnipeg's growth.
- Strengthen Emergency Response Capacity: Ensure sufficient firefighters, equipment, and resources are available when emergencies happen.
- Expand Fire Prevention: Invest in inspections, fire safety education, and prevention programs that protect lives and property.
- Strengthen Arson Prevention: Improve fire investigations and coordination with police to address deliberately set fires.
- Plan Emergency Services Alongside Development: Ensure new neighbourhoods have appropriate fire protection and emergency response capacity as they grow.
- Protect Firefighter Health and Wellness: Prioritize cancer prevention, protective equipment, mental health, and workplace safety.
- Improve Accountability and Transparency: Provide regular public reporting on response times, staffing, overtime costs, and service performance.
- Expand Medical Response Squads: Work with the Province to expand efficient two-person medical response teams while keeping larger fire crews available for other emergencies.
- Establish Sustainable Long-Term Planning: Build an evidence-based emergency services strategy that strengthens public safety while respecting taxpayers.
These priorities reflect something I strongly believe: protecting our first responders, improving public safety, and spending taxpayer dollars responsibly must go hand in hand.
Our firefighters deserve more than words of appreciation. They deserve meaningful action, proper resources, and a City Hall that listens to the professionals working on the frontlines every day.
Thank you, Nick, and the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg for the open, constructive conversation. I'm grateful for the opportunity to discuss these priorities and look forward to continuing our work together.
A safer Winnipeg starts with supporting those who protect us.
