📚 Welcome to September’s Accountancy Jargon Buster!

This month, we’re demystifying “Payment on Account”, a term that often puzzles many small business owners and contractors.

Payment on Account is a system HMRC uses to collect your Self Assessment tax in advance. Instead of paying your full tax bill in one go, you make two payments, usually in January and July, each covering half of your previous year’s tax bill.

💡 Pro tip: Keeping track of your profits throughout the year can help you avoid overpaying or unexpected bills when payments on account are due. If your income drops, you can ask HMRC to reduce your payments.

Understanding Payment on Account means better cash flow management and fewer surprises at tax time!

If you’re a landlord or self-employed and have dabbled in cryptocurrency – even just occasionally – it’s time to pay attention.

HMRC is tightening its grip on digital assets (or cryptoassets), with new international reporting rules coming into effect from January 2026. These changes could lead to fines of up to £300, or even more, if you’re found to be non-compliant.

This isn’t scare-mongering. It’s about understanding the upcoming rules and taking steps now to ensure you’re on the right side of the law.

If you have questions or if we can help in any way, please call our expert team on 01296 468 185, or email [email protected].

When it comes to VAT, even the biggest brands aren’t immune from scrutiny. Marks & Spencer (M&S) is currently at the centre of a legal battle with HMRC over the classification – and therefore the VAT treatment, of one of its food items: a strawberry sandwich.

It might sound trivial, but the implications reach far beyond the high street and into the accounting practices of small businesses and contractors across the UK.

So why exactly is HMRC taking M&S to court? And what can you, as a business owner/director, learn from it?

If you have questions or if we can help in any way, please call our expert team on 01296 468 185, or email [email protected].

📚 It’s time for August’s Accountancy Jargon Buster!

This month, we’re unpacking “Corporation Tax” – a key term every limited company owner needs to understand 💼

Corporation Tax is the tax your company pays on its profits. That includes trading profits, investments, and chargeable gains. The current main rate (as of 2025) is 25%, but small companies with profits under £50,000 may qualify for a lower marginal rate.

💡 Pro tip: Staying on top of your allowable expenses and planning your dividends smartly can help you manage your Corporation Tax bill more efficiently.

Understanding Corporation Tax is vital to avoiding surprises and staying compliant with HMRC and we’re here to make it easier.
