🚨 Doing your own Self Assessment? One small tick could make a big difference.

When you're just starting out in business, it's tempting to focus only on your tax bill. However, a simple mistake or a missed box on your Self Assessment return could affect your National Insurance record and, in turn, your future State Pension entitlement.

I've seen many people assume everything is being recorded correctly, only to discover years later that they have gaps in their National Insurance record.

✅ Check your return carefully before submitting.
✅ Make sure your self-employment details are completed correctly.
✅ Don't assume HMRC will automatically know your intentions.

Sometimes it's not the figures that cause problems—it's the boxes that weren't ticked.

A few minutes checking your return today could save you a lot of headaches in the future.

📢 Did you know?

If you're self-employed, the Small Profits Threshold for the 2026/27 tax year is £7,105.

✅ If your profits are £7,105 or more, you'll usually receive a qualifying year towards your State Pension without having to pay Class 2 National Insurance contributions.

⚠️ If your profits are below £7,105, you won't automatically receive a qualifying year. However, you can choose to pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions, currently £3.65 per week, to protect your State Pension entitlement.

If you don't earn enough and don't receive National Insurance credits or make voluntary contributions, you could end up with a gap in your National Insurance record, which may reduce your State Pension in the future.

It's worth checking your National Insurance record regularly to make sure you're building qualifying years for retirement.
