📉 UK business confidence has fallen to its lowest level in 17 months.

For small businesses, periods of uncertainty make it even more important to understand your numbers.

✔️ Keep an eye on cash flow
✔️ Review your costs regularly
✔️ Know when your tax payments are due
✔️ Keep your bookkeeping up to date
✔️ Don't wait until year-end to find out how your business is performing

Good financial information isn't just about filing accounts — it can help you make better decisions throughout the year.

🚨 Companies House identity checks are no longer just a box to tick.

On 17 September, Companies House and the Insolvency Service announced the first convictions for failing to comply with the new identity verification requirements.

You need to verify your identity before your company's next confirmation statement is filed.
So, if you're a company director and haven't done yours yet, don't leave it until the last minute.

✅ Verification can be completed free of charge through Companies House using GOV.UK One Login
✅ You can also verify through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
✅ Once verified, you'll receive a personal code which you'll need for your Companies House filings

It's one of those jobs that's much easier to get sorted before your next filing is due.

🚨 Got untaxed income in 2025/26? Don’t miss 5 October 2026.

That’s the deadline to register for Self Assessment if you need to file a tax return for the tax year that ended on 5 April 2026.

Many people think 31 January is the key date — but that’s when your return and any tax owed are actually due. Registering comes first.

You may need to register if you have:

💼 Self-employment income over £1,000 gross
🏠 Rental income over the property allowance
💷 Untaxed income HMRC doesn’t already know about
📈 Taxable gains or other income not covered by PAYE

Registering by 5 October doesn’t mean paying tax then — your 2025/26 tax return and payment aren’t due until 31 January 2027.

📌 Payment on Account deadline: 31st July

A quick reminder to all self-assessment taxpayers — your second Payment on Account for the 2024/25 tax year is due by 31st July 2026.

✅ Log in to your HMRC account and check exactly how much is owed — the figure is based on last year's tax bill, but it may have changed if you've filed your return or made adjustments.
✅ If your income has dropped this year, you can apply to reduce your Payments on Account so you're not overpaying.
✅ Pay on time to avoid interest charges — HMRC's late-payment interest adds up quickly.

One of the biggest changes many company directors may not be aware of is the new Self Assessment reporting requirements for the 2025/26 tax year.
If you're a director of a close company (which includes most owner-managed businesses), HMRC now requires additional information to be included on your tax return, including:

🔹Company name and registration number
🔹Dividends received from the company
🔹Your percentage shareholding

It's another reminder that tax compliance continues to evolve, and keeping on top of these changes is becoming increasingly important for both directors and their advisers.

If you're a company director and complete a Self Assessment tax return, now is a good time to ensure you're aware of these new reporting obligations before filing your tax return.

🚗 Mileage rates are going up!
HMRC has updated the approved mileage allowance payments (AMAPs) — good news for anyone using their own vehicle for business travel.

📈 New rates:
• Cars & vans — 55p per mile (first 10,000 miles)
• Motorcycles — 24p per mile
• Bicycles — 20p per mile

If you reimburse employees (or claim as a sole trader/director), make sure your policies, expense apps and payroll are updated to reflect the new figures.

💼 A director's loan account (DLA) tracks money flowing between you and your company. It seems simple — until HMRC gets involved.

Here's what most directors miss: 👇

When YOU owe the company money: If your DLA is overdrawn at year-end and not repaid within 9 months ⏳, your company pays Section 455 tax at 33.75% on the balance. That tax is only repaid by HMRC when YOU repay the loan.

When the company owes YOU money: You're in the safer position, but watch out: if the company pays you interest, it's a deductible expense for the company but taxable income for you.

🌟 The golden rules:
Keep detailed records of every transaction 📝
Repay overdrawn balances before the 9-month deadline ⏰
Charge commercial interest rates if the company borrows from you 💰
Document everything in board minutes 📄

Most business owners don't need to be VAT experts. But these three are non-negotiable 👇

1️⃣ £90,000 — the line in the sand
If your taxable turnover hits £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period (not your tax year — any 12 months), you must register with HMRC.
You also need to register if you expect to cross £90,000 in the next 30 days alone.
Miss the deadline and HMRC will backdate your registration.

2️⃣ Zero-rated is NOT the same as exempt ⚠️
➡️ Zero-rated (0%) — children's clothes, most food, books.
➡️ Exempt — insurance, postage stamps, most financial services, healthcare.

3️⃣ Every 3 months — HMRC wants its update
Quarterly VAT returns. Submitted digitally under Making Tax Digital. Payment due roughly one month and seven days after the quarter ends.

Late filing = penalty points. Enough points = automatic fines. HMRC doesn't send polite reminders.
