We’re halfway through the year. It’s a good time to take a step back and see how things are actually going. What’s working, what’s not, and whether the numbers are lining up with the effort you’re putting in. If you’re not sure where you stand, now’s the time to check in with your bookkeeper.

Chasing unpaid invoices is draining!

After a full day on the tools, the last thing you need is awkward payment calls.

Good credit control means steadier cash flow, fewer uncomfortable conversations, and less time spent chasing money.

It’s something we take care of for many of our clients.

Not every trade business needs to grow into a big operation. For some, steady, reliable, and profitable is exactly the aim. The important thing is knowing what you’re building, and making sure the numbers support it.

There’s a shift in HMRC’s approach to overdue tax. Have you noticed?

Over the last few months I’ve seen more conversations around:
• tighter payment plans
• shorter repayment periods
• more scrutiny over affordability
• less tolerance for repeated arrears

HMRC are still agreeing Time To Pay arrangements, but they’re asking more questions before saying yes.

A few things I know that can help if a business is struggling:

✔️ Keep returns up to date
✔️ Speak to HMRC ASAP
✔️ Have a repayment proposal
✔️ Be able to explain what caused the issue and why it’s temporary

The businesses getting into the most difficulty are often not unprofitable businesses. They’re businesses without visibility or good planning.

It’s May-ntenance month. You wouldn’t ignore a small leak or skip a boiler service. One month into the new financial year is a good time to check your numbers, review what’s outstanding, and make sure you know how this year is shaping up. A bit of business maintenance now saves hassle later.

*Management accounts* are financial reports which are prepared regularly during the year (monthly/quarterly) to help business owners understand how the business is performing.

Think of them as the business dashboard
rather than the year-end history that year end accounts show.

They typically include things like:

* Profit & Loss report
(How much money came in, what went out, and what profit was left)

* Balance Sheet
(What the business owns, owes, and what’s left)

* Aged Debtors & Creditors
(Who owes you money and who you owe money to)

* Budget vs Actual comparisons
(Are you spending more than expected?)

* Cashflow forecast
(Can the business comfortably pay its bills?)

But good management accounts should go beyond financial reports.

They should explain what the numbers mean, including what’s changed, what needs attention and what decisions might need making

The difference between bookkeeping and management accounts is important too.

Bookkeeping records what happened.
Management accounts help you understand it.
