Home-Based Finance Assistant & Bookkeeper – Xero Specialist

📍 Selsey / Chichester area
🏡 Hybrid working
⏰ 20 hours per week – 4 hours a day, Monday to Friday
💷 £15k-£17k per year depending on experience

Tradermate is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced bookkeeper and confident Xero user to join our small, friendly team.

We work mainly with trade businesses – think builders, plumbers and other busy business owners who would much rather be doing what they’re good at than worrying about their bookkeeping!

You’ll be helping us with things like:

✨ Day-to-day bookkeeping in Xero
✨ Bank and supplier reconciliations
✨ Dext & Hubdoc
✨ VAT and CIS returns
✨ Stripe, GoCardless, PayPal and other payment platforms
✨ Financial reporting
✨ Speaking directly with clients and helping keep everything on track

We’re looking for someone who already has bookkeeping experience and strong Xero skills, but just as importantly, someone who is organised, dependable, comfortable working independently and genuinely enjoys being part of a small team.

🏡 The role is hybrid. After initial face-to-face training at our garden office in Selsey, much of the role can be worked from home. We’ll provide a company laptop and second screen.

Because training and regular team meet-ups are important to us, you’ll need to live within approximately one hour of Selsey, West Sussex and have a suitable space at home to work.

There’s also plenty of opportunity for the role to develop as Tradermate continues to grow.

We're always sharing what kind of clients we work brilliantly with, but did you know we have a Red Flag list too? These are the clients we choose not to work with...

-Want the cheapest possible bookkeeping service rather than support that adds real value.

-Consistently ignore requests for information or leave your bookkeeping months behind.

-Aren't prepared to use cloud accounting software such as Xero.
See bookkeeping as a once-a-year exercise rather than an important part of running your business.

-Don't want to understand your numbers or use them to make better business decisions.

-Regularly mix personal and business spending without being willing to improve your processes.

-Expect us to "make the numbers fit" or do anything that isn't fully compliant with HMRC requirements.

-Treat deadlines as optional or expect last-minute emergencies to become the norm.

-Don't value open, honest communication and a collaborative working relationship.

-Aren't committed to growing and improving your business.

Note that it doesn't matter how much of a challenge you're starting point is, or how far behind you are if you're ready to catch up. We love fixing a pickle :)

“I feel a bit stupid asking this…”

We hear that far too often from business owners.

Builders. Plumbers. Salon owners. Brilliant people who are experts in what they do, but somehow think they should already understand VAT, CIS and cash flow.

Why?

Nobody expects me to fit a boiler or build an extension, at least I hope not!

So why should you know accounting if you’ve never been taught it?

You don’t need to apologise for asking questions.

You don’t need to pretend you’ve got it all figured out.

And there are no stupid questions.

Our job isn’t to impress you with jargon.

It’s to help you understand your numbers and feel more confident about your business.

No judgement. No jargon. Just clarity, control and confidence.

Quoting a job properly is one thing. Sticking to it is another.
Small extras, last-minute changes, or ‘while you’re here’ jobs can quietly eat into your margins.
If you’re not careful, a job that looked good on paper ends up not being worth it.
Clear quotes, agreed upfront, and knowing when to say ‘that’s extra’ makes a big difference over time.
