You must normally register for VAT when your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000.
A common mistake is checking turnover only at the end of the financial or tax year. The VAT threshold applies to any rolling 12-month period, so it should be reviewed every month.
You may also need to register if you expect your taxable turnover to exceed £90,000 within the next 30 days alone.
Remember:
✅ The threshold is based on turnover, not profit
✅ It includes sales that are standard-rated, reduced-rated or zero-rated
✅ VAT-exempt income is not included
✅ You can register voluntarily before reaching the threshold
Registering late could mean paying VAT to HMRC even if you did not charge it to your customers.
📩 Contact Blake Accounting if your turnover is approaching the threshold or you are unsure whether VAT registration applies to your business.
