Why is there never enough money in the business…

It's a question we hear surprisingly often.

In fact, only last week we were chatting with one of our clients who's recently reached £1 million turnover. The business is growing pretty fast, they've built a fantastic team and demand for their services has never been stronger.

But despite all of that, the owner admitted in her quarterly business improvement meeting:

"I honestly thought we’d feel more comfortable by this stage."

If that sounds familiar, you're certainly not alone.

Many business owners assume that as turnover grows, life automatically becomes easier. More work should mean more money in the bank, right?

Unfortunately, that's rarely how it works.

Growth often creates new financial pressures.

In the early days of a business, things are relatively simple. A new client comes on board, and you notice the difference almost immediately.

As your business grows though, more of your income is already spoken for.

Software subscriptions.
Office costs.

So long, farewell…

This month we sadly say goodbye to two long-standing members of the Panthera Accounting team, Gemma Moore and Mandi Forte who are both off to explore exciting new adventures.

Gemma, our Senior Bookkeeper, has been with Panthera for 16 years. Since the very early days, when Tory was first setting up the business from her house. The changes she has seen! We wouldn’t be the business we are now without her support. Gemma’s vast wisdom, knowledge and expertise in all things bookkeeping and VAT is highly valued by colleagues and clients alike. Gemma is leaving to work alongside her husband in his growing business.

Mandi, one of our Senior Accountants, joined us 8.5 years ago from Ernst Young. During her time with us Mandi gained her ACCA qualification and has provided valuable accounting support to many of our clients over the years. She is particularly passionate about building a strong relationship with the person behind the business, so she can give tailored advice that works for them. Mandi is leaving to join a London-based accounting practice.

A huge thank you, Gemma and Mandi, for all your hard work, commitment to our clients, meeting countless accounting deadlines and most of all your friendship and support.

You will be greatly missed by everyone in the team.

Welcome Freya!

We’re delighted to welcome Freya Hewerdine into the Panthera Accounting team as our Accounts Technician.

Freya brings 8 years of experience working in finance, with a strong background in managing day-to-day finance operations, maintaining accurate financial records and supporting businesses with invoicing, reconciliations and financial reporting.

She's used to working in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail, organisation and providing a high standard of client service are essential, and we're looking forward to her bringing that experience to Panthera.

Freya will be responsible for bookkeeping & VAT services and supporting the Accountants and Senior Accountants with annual accounts preparation.

Could VAT and PAYE soon have to be paid by Direct Debit?

The Government is currently consulting on plans that could make Direct Debit the default payment method for VAT and PAYE.

Nothing has changed yet, but if the proposal goes ahead it could affect how many Limited Companies manage their finances.

There are some potential benefits:
- Less chance of forgetting a payment and facing late payment penalties.
- Fewer manual payment tasks each month.
- Greater confidence that tax payments are made on time.

But there are also some possible downsides, particularly for growing service-based businesses:
- Less flexibility over exactly when money leaves your bank account.
- Cash flow could become more challenging if clients pay you late but HMRC still collects on the due date.
- Business owners may need to forecast cash flow more carefully to ensure funds are always available.

For many growing businesses, the challenge isn't paying the tax. It's making sure the cash is there when it's due. That's why having up-to-date financial information and looking ahead, rather than just looking backwards, becomes increasingly important as your business grows.

Twenty-five years…

It's hard to put into words what that kind of commitment means, but today we're celebrating someone very special Fielden, our Operations Director.

Vikki joined the Panthera team following the acquisition of KJ Dunn Accountants back in the very early days and is celebrating 25 years across the two businesses. Over the years, she's been a constant source of knowledge, wisdom and calm leadership as we've evolved into the Panthera Accounting we are today.

Vikki has helped guide the business through many changes, supported numerous colleagues and built trusted relationships with clients that span decades. In fact, some of the clients she works with today have been with her for longer than she’s been with us!

If you've ever worked with Vikki, you'll know that she genuinely cares. She takes the time to understand what matters to people, never cuts corners and is always willing to share her experience to help both clients and colleagues succeed. Her technical expertise is exceptional, but it's her kindness, integrity and unwavering commitment to doing the right thing that make such a lasting difference.
