Today we're celebrating Sam Desmond

Just under a year ago, Sam made the big move from his beautiful homeland of Wales to join Panthera as a trainee Accounts Technician.

Fast forward 12 months and it's hard to remember what the team was like before he arrived.

From day one, Sam has been someone you can rely on. Whether he's helping a client with a accounting query, supporting a colleague or taking on something completely new, his attitude is always the same: positive, thoughtful and willing to help.

What has impressed us most isn't just how quickly he's developed technically, but the commitment he's shown to learning and continually improving. With plenty of hard work, support from the team and a real determination to build his career, Sam was promoted to Senior Accounts Technician last month and is already studying towards his AAT Level 4 qualification.

Jayne Johnson was at her wits’ end with accountants who gave so little real business help.

Founding Director of recruitment specialists Better People Limited, Jayne is nothing if not diligent in her selections, whether that is to find the right candidate for her client’s recruitment needs, or to support her own business. When she set out to find a new accountant, a bad previous experience meant that Jayne knew exactly what she did not want.

She recalled “I knew I had to have an accountant, but my first one always made me feel awful. He spoke in terms I didn’t understand. He told me what to do, but not how. The next promised to be different, but my accountant didn’t seem to know how to – or even want to – communicate.”

Finding the fit wasn’t just financial.

Jayne searched for support to help her manage the business better, as well as her finances. She spoke with many accounting firms before engaging seriously with just a few. “I wanted a relationship-based business that would understand that numbers weren’t my strong suit and give me answers to my questions” she said.

Is it time to get a bookkeeper for your Limited business?

A bookkeeper deals with the day-to-day organisation, recording and reporting of financial transactions within your business.

Essentially, an accountant can’t do their job properly without good quality bookkeeping.

Here are some of the tasks a really great bookkeeper can take on;

• Tracking daily transactions – they keep track of daily transactions, such as customer sales and business expenses. If your accounting software has daily automatic bank feeds this is a great tool and can save time and money on data entry time.

• Preparing and sending invoices – preparing invoices and sending them to clients is another bookkeeping responsibility, as well as chasing late payments.

• Accounts payable – they can also add purchase invoices to your accounting software and set up payment runs.

• Monitoring cashflow – one of the most important tasks of a great bookkeeper is making sure the company doesn’t run out of day-to-day money by watching the balance of cash in and cash out of the business.

• Preparing the books – it’s the bookkeeper's job to ensure that the accounts records are correct and up to date when the accountant needs them.

• VAT returns – as bookkeepers are tracking and coding your daily expenses they are also best placed for processing and filing your VAT returns.

Our super-diligent bookkeepers have noticed that some of our clients are still using the old mileage rate.

From 6 April 2026, HMRC increased the approved mileage rate for cars and vans from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles each tax year. The rate remains 25p per mile for any business mileage over 10,000 miles.

If directors or employees use their own vehicle for business journeys, your company can reimburse them at the new 55p rate. This means they can receive a higher tax-free mileage payment, and the business can claim tax relief on the increased cost.

Don't forget to keep accurate mileage records, including the date, purpose of the journey and miles travelled, to support any claims if HMRC ever asks for them.
