Investing can feel hardest when the future is uncertain, and it can be tempting to wait for the perfect moment.

Using a £10,000 example, our latest guide explains how phasing a lump sum can reduce reliance on one investment date, why diversification spreads risk across different assets, regions and investment styles and how a financial plan can keep decisions focused on long-term goals rather than short-term headlines.

It also explains the trade-offs, because neither phasing nor diversification can remove investment risk.

Always nice to get feedback like this.

This client came to me with a few different pension pots and just wanted to know what to do with them.

A few meetings later, everything’s organised and, more importantly, they feel back in control.

Really appreciate the 5 star review.

What happens when investment markets fall?

Market downturns can feel uncomfortable, particularly when you see the value of your pension or investments falling. However, they are a normal part of long-term investing.

The decisions made during these periods can have a lasting impact.

Selling when markets are down may turn a temporary fall into a permanent loss, while trying to predict the perfect time to leave and re-enter the market is extremely difficult.

Having a clear financial plan can help you:

• Keep short-term market movements in perspective
• Avoid making decisions based on fear or headlines
• Ensure your investments remain aligned with your goals
• Stay focused on the reasons you invested in the first place

The attached guide explains what happens when markets fall and why patience, diversification and a long-term perspective can be so important.

People rarely tell me their favourite part of working together was that their investments performed well.

Most of the time it’s :-

“You gave me the confidence to retire.”

“You explained everything in a way that finally made sense.”

“You stopped me making a decision I’d have regretted.”

That’s why I found this graphic so interesting.

It brings together research from several well-known organisations, all pointing towards the same conclusion :-

The real value of financial advice isn’t just about investment performance. It’s about helping people make better financial decisions over the long term.

For me, that’s what good financial planning is all about. Helping people make informed decisions, avoid costly mistakes and feel confident about their future.

💡 What are investments and why do people invest?

The next part of our Financial Education series focuses on investments and understanding how long term growth actually works.

Investing can often feel complicated.

There are endless headlines, market predictions and opinions about what is going to happen next.

But at its core, investing is actually much simpler than many people think.

It starts with one idea:

Putting your money to work so it can grow over time.

In simple terms, most investments fall into three main areas:

✅ Shares — owning part of a company
✅ Bonds — lending money in return for interest
✅ Funds — a collection of investments held together

One of the most important things to understand is the difference between investing and speculating.

Investing is typically focused on:

• Long term growth
• Owning productive assets
• Building wealth gradually over time

Speculation is often focused on:

• Short term price movements
• Trying to predict markets
• Chasing “what goes up next”

This is where many people can run into problems.

Markets naturally move up and down and volatility is completely normal.

A fall in value does not automatically mean a loss.

In many cases, losses only become permanent when people panic and sell at the wrong time.

This is why understanding what you own and having a long term mindset matters so much.

In our latest guide, we explain:

✔️ Why markets fluctuate
✔️ Why diversification matters
✔️ The role of funds
✔️ Why reacting to headlines can damage outcomes
✔️ How investments fit into a wider financial plan

One of the biggest lessons in investing is that activity does not always equal progress.

Better long term outcomes often come from:

👉 Having a plan
👉 Staying disciplined
👉 Ignoring short term noise

Investments should support your goals, not drive emotional decisions.

Have you ever wondered how much income you will have in retirement?

Most people know roughly what's in their pension. Very few know what that actually means for their future lifestyle.

Will it provide:

✅ £1,000 a month?
✅ £2,000 a month?
✅ £3,000+ a month?

Or are you heading for a shortfall without realising it?

I've created a free Retirement Income Report that takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

It gives you an estimate of:

📊 Your projected retirement income
📅 When you may be able to retire
🏛️ When you'll receive your State Pension
⚠️ Whether you're on track or need to take action

There is no cost and no obligation.

💡 What is a pension and why it's more than just retirement?

The next part of our Financial Education series focuses on pensions, one of the most valuable, and often misunderstood, parts of financial planning.

For many people, pensions feel confusing or restrictive.

But in reality, pensions are one of the most powerful long term planning tools available.

Why?

Because they combine:

✅ Tax relief
✅ Employer contributions
✅ Long term investment growth

At its simplest, a pension is just money being set aside today to support your future lifestyle.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that pensions are simply “locked away”.

In reality:

• Most pensions can currently be accessed from age 55 (rising to 57 in 2028)
• Modern pensions offer flexible withdrawal options
• They can often be passed on tax efficiently to beneficiaries

Another key point is that pensions are no longer just about retirement income.

They now form a major part of wider financial planning alongside:

• Cash reserves
• ISAs
• Long term investing

One of the most powerful features of pensions is the combination of:

👉 Your contributions
👉 Employer contributions
👉 Government tax relief

In many cases, this means your money receives an immediate boost before investment growth is even considered.

To help explain in a bit more detail, we've created another guide which covers the differences between:

✔️ Workplace pensions
✔️ Personal pensions & SIPPs
✔️ Defined Benefit vs Defined Contribution pensions
✔️ How tax relief works
✔️ Why compounding matters
✔️ Common pension misunderstandings
✔️ Why long term thinking is important
✔️ How pensions fit into a wider financial plan

💡 What Is an ISA and why do so many people use them?

As part of our Financial Education series, the next topic we’re covering is ISAs (Individual Savings Accounts).

ISAs are one of the most widely used financial planning tools in the UK but they’re also one of the most misunderstood.

At their core, ISAs are simply a tax-efficient wrapper that can help your money grow more efficiently over time.

✅ No Income Tax on interest
✅ No Capital Gains Tax on investment growth
✅ Flexible access to your money in most cases

One of the biggest misconceptions is that an ISA is an investment itself.

It isn’t.

The ISA is simply the container. What you hold inside it determines how your money behaves.

For example:

• A Cash ISA works similarly to a savings account and is often used for short-term security

• A Stocks & Shares ISA allows you to invest for longer-term goals and potential growth above inflation

The current ISA allowance is £20,000 per person each tax year, meaning couples could potentially shelter up to £40,000 between them.

ISAs can play an important role alongside:

Emergency savings
Pensions
Longer-term investing
Retirement planning

Most importantly, financial planning shouldn’t be about products first. It should be about understanding the purpose behind your money and using the right tools for the right goals.

We’ve created a full guide explaining:

✔️ The different types of ISA
✔️ Common misunderstandings
✔️ Cash vs Stocks & Shares ISAs
✔️ How ISAs fit into wider financial planning
✔️ Whether they’re right for you
