I recently spoke to a business owner who'd spent three months working in Dubai, came back to the UK, and had no idea he still owed HMRC.
He'd assumed leaving the country meant leaving the tax bill behind. It doesn't work like that.
UK tax residency doesn't switch off the moment you board a plane. The Statutory Residence Test determines where you actually stand — and it looks at things like how many days you spend in the UK, whether you have a home here, where your work is based, and where your family lives. Get the count wrong, and you can find yourself liable for UK tax on income earned overseas.
It gets more complicated when double tax treaties come into play. Some countries have agreements with the UK that can protect you from being taxed twice — but only if you understand them and plan accordingly before you go, not after.
The businesses and individuals who navigate this well are the ones who ask the question early. Not weeks after landing, not when the tax return is due — but before the trip is booked.
Has international work caught you off guard with unexpected tax implications? I'd be curious to hear how others have handled it.
