Your year end shouldn't feel like a mad rush to the finish line, gasping for air and promising yourself “Never again!”

If your bookkeeping is kept up to date throughout the year, year end should feel more like a nice stroll through another month end, with just a few extra things to look at.

Regular bookkeeping means transactions are dealt with while they're still fresh in your mind, receipts aren't being hunted down months later, and you're making sure every allowable business expense is accounted for correctly.

It also means problems can be spotted and dealt with throughout the year, rather than everything landing at once when the accounts need preparing.

Year end shouldn't be the point where you finally find out what's been happening in your business.

It should simply be the point where we wrap up the year you've already been keeping on top of.

Introducing Awkward Accounting Questions 👀

There are plenty of questions in business that people feel like they should already know the answer to.

So, every Tuesday, we're answering one properly.

First up: Do you actually need a separate business bank account?

The answer depends on how your business is set up, and if you're a creator, there's something else worth checking before you open one too.

Got an awkward accounting question you'd like us to cover? Send it our way.

Every client has a story.

This one came to me through a recommendation, and I had the pleasure of helping them build confidence in their business.

Receiving feedback like this is an absolute Billy Bonus. 😊

When people think about bookkeeping, they usually think about numbers.

I think about trust.

Behind every set of accounts is a person trusting me with information they'd never post online.

That trust isn't something I take lightly.

Privacy isn't an extra.

It's the foundation of our service.

"Can I claim that?"

It's probably the question I'm asked more than any other.

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes it's no.

And quite often...

"It depends."

The important thing isn't trying to claim everything.

It's understanding what you're entitled to claim and keeping the right records to support it.

One of the biggest mistakes I see isn't bad bookkeeping.

It's waiting until things feel too complicated.

The earlier you build good habits, the easier everything becomes.

Your bookkeeping doesn't need to be perfect from day one.

It just needs to start.

Your future self will thank you.

Most creators don't wake up one morning and decide to build a business.

It usually starts with one platform, then another. A few payments come in. Maybe a brand deal. Before long, you're running a business without really meaning to.

That's where good bookkeeping makes the difference.

Not because HMRC says so.

Because understanding your numbers helps you make better decisions, plan ahead and build something that's sustainable.

Your content is a business.

Your accounts should support it.

Where has my profit gone?

When opening a new company, a lot of founders choose to do their own bookkeeping for financial reasons. Whilst this does save money at the start, it could end up costing a fair bit in the long run.

Picture this, you created a Hopsky Rocksky for your kids and it was such a hit, you decided to turn that into a business. Next thing you know, these little rockets are flying off the shelf and your busy trying to keep up with the manufacturing and fulfilling these orders you never really got around to doing your bookkeeping.
Your 6, 9 even 12 months down the line and finally manage to carve out some time to sit down and get your accounts up to date. As your processing your supplier bills your start to see your profit reducing drastically and it dawns on you that whilst Hopsky Rocksky is so popular, between your cost of sales and overheads you don't have the profit left to pay yourself the dividends you were relying on in Q4.

Now rewind back to month one, you contact Burtland Bookkeeping & Accounts and we begin working together. We keep your bookkeeping up to date and provide monthly management accounts. Within our first month together, it becomes apparent that your margin on the rockets is too low, which we raise with you at our catch up meeting. You take immediate action and review material suppliers as well as increasing the price ever so slightly. Your product is now in line with the market value for this type of toy and you continue trading the rest of the year with the same demand as above. This time you end the year with cash in the bank, profit in your P&L and the salary and the dividends you wished for. This is all because you corrected your margin earlier on rather than when it was too late.

It's easy to get swept up in all the other areas of the business and leave the accounts to last minute, but that could lead to a nasty surprise when you finally get around to it. So why not invest in your finance function now to avoid being disappointed at year end?

Which financial task is the bane of your life?

You know the one where you avoid doing it until you really have to because its such a chore. You're not alone, but if you have multiple of them then you need to make some changes.

Luckily for you, we love these tasks. We enjoy reviewing the processes from start to finish, dissect them and establishing what your trying to achieve. This then allows us to overhaul the the process to make it easier, quicker and less laborious so you can gain your time and sanity back.

So are you going to carry on doing that task, or tasks, throughout 2026 or shall we work together to come up with a resolution? Call us on 07404 060051 or drop us an email on [email protected] if your ready to review and improve your processes.

Merry Christmas and thank you for a great year. We look forward to working with you again next year.
