A question Melanie gets asked is whether the VAT threshold or VAT rate is likely to change.

Here’s the pricing check many salon owners miss.

It’s not just whether a service is booked out but it’s whether it leaves enough behind once time, wages, products, rent and overheads are covered.

A full diary can still hide a pricing gap if the hourly return is too low.

Knowing your target hourly rate gives you a clearer benchmark, so your prices are based on what the salon needs to earn — not guesswork.

If you want help reviewing your pricing and making sure your services are properly structured for profit, get in touch.

VAT is one of the biggest questions salon owners ask when the business starts growing.

But the answer is rarely a straight yes or no.

It depends on your turnover, structure, pricing, cash flow and what you’re trying to build long term.

The key is to get advice before you hit the threshold — while there’s still time to plan properly.

One of the questions I get asked all the time by salon owners is around the self-employed model.

This is exactly why I’m starting this series — to answer the common questions salon owners are already asking, and to explain the things that really need specialist advice before making big business decisions.

If you’re considering the self-employed model, comment SELF-EMPLOYED or send me a DM and I’ll get in touch.

I get asked this a lot — what’s the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

The easiest way to think about it is this: the bookkeeper keeps the day-to-day numbers in order, and the accountant uses those numbers to help you understand the business properly.

And if both are working together in one place, it can save you a lot of time, hassle and back-and-forth.

Salon owners — if you use a key safe, please check your insurance policy.

A key safe might be useful for staff access, early starts, late finishes or emergencies, but your insurer may have specific conditions around how keys are stored and what counts as forced entry.

And if those conditions aren’t met, it could affect whether a claim is paid.

The lesson here isn’t to panic — it’s to check now.

Look at your policy wording, ask your insurer directly, and get written confirmation if you’re unsure.

Because the worst time to find out your key safe affects your cover is after a break-in.

If you know a salon owner who uses a key safe, please share this with them.

Copying the salon down the road might feel like the safe option.

But their rent, wages and bills aren’t yours.

If your prices are based on what someone else charges, you could be undercharging without realising — especially if your cost per hour is higher.

That’s how a full diary can still leave the business feeling tight.

Pricing should start with your numbers, not another salon’s price list.

There isn’t one VAT scheme that works best for every salon.

Flat Rate VAT can be simpler and may suit some businesses.
Standard VAT can be better for others, especially where there are more VATable costs to claim back.

The right answer depends on your salon’s numbers — your turnover, your costs, your purchases, and how the business is set up.

That’s why it’s worth reviewing both options before deciding.

Near the VAT threshold and unsure which VAT scheme suits your salon? Comment VAT or DM me and I’ll send you a message.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’ll sort it later,” this is usually what “later” looks like.

Money has been taken from the company, but it hasn’t been clearly treated as salary, dividends or expenses.

So it builds up in the Director’s Loan Account.

The issue is that DLAs often don’t feel urgent until year-end — when the accounts are being finalised and there are fewer options to tidy things properly.

That’s why regular checks matter.

Speak to a salon account specialist if you want this reviewed.
