Trivial Benefits for UK Limited Company Directors

Dear UK Limited Company Directors,

I wanted to share some useful information about trivial benefits, which can be a tax-efficient option for UK limited company directors.

A director of a close company can usually receive up to £300 per tax year in trivial benefits, as long as each individual benefit is £50 or less.

To qualify, the benefit must:

Not be cash
Not be a reward for work or performance
Not be part of the director’s contract
Cost £50 or less per benefit

Please keep receipts or invoices and record each benefit separately in the company records.

For example:

April – £50 gift card
June – £45 meal voucher
August – £40 flowers
October – £50 wine hamper
December – £50 Christmas voucher
March – £50 birthday gift

Total: £285

This can be a simple tax-efficient way to take small benefits from the company, provided the HMRC conditions are met.

📢 Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: Are You in Scope?

MTD for Income Tax is being introduced for many sole traders and landlords from 6 April 2026.

You may need to prepare if you receive income from:

🏢 Self-employment
🏠 UK property
📊 A combination of both

Under MTD, you won’t just complete one tax return at the end of the year. You’ll need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software.

Now is a good time to check:

✅ Whether MTD applies to you
✅ Whether your records are digital
✅ Whether your bookkeeping software is compatible
✅ Whether you need help getting set up before the deadline

The first quarterly update for the 2026/27 tax year is due by 7 August 2026 for those required to join from April 2026.
