Registered for Self Assessment?

Registering is only the beginning. If this is your first time dealing with Self Assessment, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Your UTR - HMRC will send you a Unique Taxpayer Reference, which you’ll need for your tax return.
2. Keep your records - Start keeping track of your income and allowable expenses from the beginning. Good records make things much easier later.
3. Complete your tax return - Once the tax year ends, you’ll need to report your relevant income and expenses to HMRC.
4. Plan for your tax bill - Don’t wait until the deadline to think about the tax you may owe. Setting money aside throughout the year can help avoid a nasty surprise.

If you’ve recently registered, getting organised now can make Self Assessment much easier to manage.

Do you need to register for Self Assessment?

It’s a question we hear quite often, particularly from those who have recently become self-employed or started receiving additional income.

You may need to register for Self Assessment if:
🔸 You’ve started working for yourself as a sole trader
🔸 You receive income from letting out property
🔸 You have additional income that isn’t being taxed through PAYE
🔸 Your circumstances have changed and you’re no longer having enough tax deducted automatically

The rules can depend on your individual circumstances, so it’s important not to assume that you either definitely do or definitely don’t need to register.

If you do need to register for Self Assessment for the 2025/26 tax year, the deadline is 5 October 2026.

If you’re unsure whether you need to register or what your next steps should be, we’re always happy to help.

The best business owners know they don't have to do everything themselves.

Running a business often means wearing lots of different hats. Sales, customer service, marketing, administration, finance... the list goes on.

That's why many businesses see their accountant as more than someone who prepares accounts or files tax returns.

A good accountant becomes part of your wider business team.

Sometimes that means answering a quick question before you make an important decision. Other times, it's helping you understand your numbers, keeping your bookkeeping on track, managing payroll or making sure you stay compliant as your business grows.

Every business is different, which is why the support you need should be too. Whether you simply need someone to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes or you're looking for ongoing guidance as your business develops, having the right support allows you to focus on what you do best.

Because good accountancy isn't just about the numbers. It's about helping your business move forward with confidence.

One of the most overlooked financial tasks in a small business isn't filing a tax return. It's regularly reconciling your bank account.

That might sound technical, but it simply means checking that the transactions shown in your accounting records match what's actually happened in your bank account.

It's an easy task to put off, especially when business is busy, but keeping your bank reconciled can help you:

✔ Spot missing or duplicated transactions.
✔ Identify errors before they become bigger problems.
✔ Keep your financial records accurate and up to date.
✔ Have greater confidence in the figures you're using to make business decisions.

Think of it as a quick health check for your finances. The more regularly it's done, the easier it becomes and the more reliable your records will be.

How do you pay yourself from your business?

It's a question many company directors ask, especially in the early stages of running a limited company.

Unlike employees, directors often have more than one way of taking money from their business. This could include a salary, dividends or repayments of money they've previously introduced to the company.

The right approach depends on your company's circumstances and should always be considered carefully. What works well for one business owner may not be suitable for another.

Understanding how you're paying yourself and why can help you stay organised, avoid unexpected tax implications and make informed decisions as your business grows.

If you're unsure whether your current approach is still right for your business, it's always worth a check up.

For many businesses, important receipts, invoices and financial documents are still stored in folders, envelopes or glove boxes.

Keeping digital copies of your financial records doesn't just save space, it can make running your business much easier.

A digital record system can help you:
🔶 Find documents quickly when you need them.
🔶 Keep your bookkeeping up to date.
🔶 Reduce the risk of paperwork being lost or damaged.
🔶 Make preparing tax returns and financial reports much simpler.
🔶 Support digital record keeping as businesses continue moving towards Making Tax Digital.

Whether you scan receipts as you receive them or use cloud accounting software to store invoices electronically, small changes can save valuable time and make staying organised much easier.

Attention Property Landlords - If you earn income from rental properties, it's worth keeping an eye on changes planned for April 2027.

The Government has announced changes to the way property income will be taxed, with Income Tax rates on property income increasing by 2 percentage points from April 2027. Depending on your circumstances, this could affect the amount of tax you pay on your rental income.

While there's still time before the changes take effect, it's a good opportunity to review your property finances, consider how the changes may affect your portfolio and make sure you're planning ahead.

Every landlord's circumstances are different, so understanding how the changes apply to you is important.

If you'd like to discuss what these changes could mean for your property portfolio, we're here to help.
