Directors often overlook the small perks that can be taken from their company tax-efficiently, but they can soon add up!

One simple example is Trivial Benefits. If you’re a director of a limited company, HMRC allows the company to provide small perks (like gift cards) that are not taxable, provided certain conditions are met.

For directors of close companies, this can mean up to £300 per year in trivial benefits (typically six separate benefits of £50 each). Think along the lines of a £50 gift card to celebrate finishing a big project, hitting a milestone or even just as a thank you.

Key points to note:
• Each benefit must cost £50 or less
• It can’t be cash (but gift cards are usually fine)
• It can’t be a reward for work or performance
• It must not be in your employment contract

Used properly, trivial benefits are a straightforward way to extract a little extra value from your company without additional tax or reporting.
