Growth exposes problems that smaller businesses never had to deal with. Audit failures are one of the clearest signs that systems haven't kept pace.

We've pulled together the ten most common audit failures we see in growing businesses, from weak segregation of duties to revenue recognition that hasn't caught up with a changing business model.

Swipe through. If even one of these sounds familiar, it's worth a conversation before your next audit, not during it.

An audit isn't just a compliance exercise. Done well, it's one of the most valuable health checks your business will get all year.

A good auditor doesn't just confirm the numbers add up. They spot the weak controls before they become real problems, flag the risks management hasn't seen yet, and hand you insight you can actually act on.

In this video, we explain what separates a quality audit from a box ticking one, and why the difference matters more than most businesses realise.

Ready to get more from your audit? Let's talk.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now in force. If you're self-employed or a landlord with income over £50,000, the rules already apply to you.

That means digital record keeping, software that talks to HMRC directly, and quarterly updates instead of one return a year. The first quarterly deadline has already passed for some, with more falling throughout the year.

Awareness of this change is still surprisingly low. If you haven't set up compatible software or aren't sure whether the threshold applies to you, now is the time to find out, not after a missed deadline triggers a penalty point.

Salary or dividend? It's one of the most common questions company directors ask us, and the answer is rarely the same for two businesses.

Tax rates, allowances and your own circumstances all affect the right split.

Get it wrong and you could be paying more tax than you need to.

Our free Salary vs Dividend Calculator gives you a clear, instant comparison based on your numbers, not a generic rule of thumb.

The best acquisitions are won or lost in the detail nobody wants to read.

Due diligence isn't a box ticking exercise. Done properly, it's where the real story of a business gets told: the risks hiding in the numbers, the assumptions a forecast is quietly leaning on, the liabilities that don't show up until someone goes looking.

In this video, we explain how strong audit and finance insight changes the outcome of an acquisition, for buyers and sellers alike.

Buying or selling soon? Get the detail right before you sign anything.

Companies House identity verification is now mandatory for all directors and persons with significant control.

While the official transition ends on 18th November 2026, your actual deadline is tied to your company's next confirmation statement, which for many directors is much sooner.

Miss it and your confirmation statement can't be filed at all.

Not sure when your deadline falls? Check now, not the week your filing is due.

New investment changes everything about how your business gets scrutinised, including who audits it.

Investors don't just want an audit. They want an auditor who understands the sector, asks the right questions, and gives them confidence in the numbers behind the business they've just backed.

Picking the wrong fit at this stage creates friction at every reporting deadline. Picking the right one builds trust from day one.

In this video, we walk through what to look for in an auditor once investment is on the table, and the mistakes we see growing businesses make.

Just taken on investment? Let's talk about what comes next.

Most business owners start preparing to sell about six months too late.

By the time a buyer is at the table, the gaps are already showing.

👉Messy management accounts.
👉Unclear ownership structures.
👉Forecasts nobody can defend under questioning.

Our Sale Readiness Checklist gives you a clear, practical view of where your business stands today against what a buyer or investor will actually look for.

No guesswork. Just the questions that matter, answered honestly.

If a sale or investment round is even a possibility in the next two years, start now.

Work through this free, digital checklist and see where you stand.

6th July is the P11D deadline. If you've given directors or employees company cars, private medical cover, gym memberships or any other benefit in kind this tax year, this affects you.

P11D and P11D(b) forms for 2025/26 must be filed by 6th July. Class 1A National Insurance on those benefits is due by 22nd July if you're paying electronically.

Miss it and penalties stack up automatically, calculated monthly until HMRC receives your return.

This is also one of the last years employers will file P11Ds the traditional way. From April 2027, payrolling most benefits in kind becomes mandatory, so the way you report this is about to change for good.

Need help getting this filed on time, or planning ahead for the switch? Talk to our team this week.

Audit exemption rules changed this year, and most directors still haven't checked where they now stand.

From periods starting on or after 6 April 2025, the small company thresholds rose for the first time since 2016. Turnover up to £15 million. Balance sheet total up to £7.5 million. Average employees up to 50. Meet two of those three and you may no longer need a statutory audit.

But qualifying on paper and qualifying in practice are different things. Banks, investors and bigger customers often still expect audited accounts, whatever the law says you can skip.

Watch the video to find out exactly where your company stands and what to consider before you drop the audit altogether.
