Can your business be making a profit while you’re still wondering where all the money has gone? 💭

Yes, it can - and it’s one of the finance questions business owners shouldn’t feel embarrassed to ask. In her latest Know-How article, our member Abi Mullins from Books In Order - Bookkeeping and Accountancy explains why profit, cash flow and the balance in your bank account can tell different stories.

It’s a reassuring read if you’ve ever nodded along to a finance conversation while thinking, “I’m not sure I actually understand that.”

I KEEP SEEING BUSINESS OWNERS MADE TO FEEL STUPID FOR ASKING FINANCE QUESTIONS.

And honestly? It needs to stop.

In the past two weeks alone, I’ve spoken to business owners who have picked up the phone and asked for professional help, only to be spoken down to and made to feel inadequate for not understanding something.

One business owner I spoke to was looking for advice because they thought they might need to register for Making Tax Digital, but they weren’t even sure what MTD was, and their accountant hadn’t been in touch with them.

And I get it.

Accountants and bookkeepers are busy. We’re overwhelmed too.

But so are small business owners.

For some, their business is being run alongside a full-time job, childcare, family commitments and everything else life throws at them.

So if a business owner picks up the phone and asks a question, there’s a reason they’re asking.

They don’t need to be made to feel silly for not knowing.

They need someone to explain it.

They need someone to take the jargon away.

They need someone to say, Don’t worry, let’s work through this together.”

Because that’s what financial support should be.

It should bring help, advice and peace of mind.

It should leave you feeling informed and empowered, with the right tools to make the best decisions for your business.

Not embarrassed.

Not judged.

Not afraid to ask the next question.

Because confidence grows when things start to make sense.

And I’m not interested in confusing you with finance jargon just to sound clever.

You shouldn’t need a finance degree to understand your own business.

Clear communication matters just as much as the numbers.

As a mum of two young children running a small business myself, I know how overwhelming working for yourself can be. I know there are days when you’re trying to keep all the plates spinning and the last thing you need is someone making you feel like you should already know the answer.

You don’t have to know everything. That’s what your financial professional is there for.

Business owners deserve financial support that feels human.

If you need human, straight forward financial advice from someone who gets it, get in touch.

How to Know When Your Accounting System Needs an Upgrade

Is your business growing, but your systems aren't keeping up? 👀

Manual processes, spreadsheets and constant firefighting can quickly start taking up more time than they save.

Good systems can reduce mistakes, make delegation easier, give you better data and create more headspace to focus on growing your business.

And with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax being introduced for sole traders and landlords, getting your accounting systems in order is becoming increasingly important.

💡 Invest the time today. Benefit tomorrow.
