Self Assessment, what do I actually need from you?

You don't need to have everything perfectly organised before contacting your accountant.

For your Self Assessment, I'll need your business income and expenses, but that's not always the whole picture.

Employment, bank interest, pension contributions, student loan or other income can also be relevant.

Not sure whether something matters? Tell me anyway. I'll work out what needs to be included.

And don't spend hours reorganising everything just for me. Show me how you've been keeping your records and we'll start from there.

BUDGET WATCH 03 👀

£35 BILLION. That's a lot of money.

A new report says the UK government could need up to £35 billion more in the future to cover rising costs and spending plans.

And whenever we hear that the government needs more money, there's one question that usually comes to mind…

Does that mean we're going to pay more tax?

Well, not necessarily.

The government has a few options. It could raise taxes, spend less in other areas or change some of its plans.

But here's what matters: nothing has been decided because of this report.

It's a warning about what could happen in the future, not an announcement that your taxes are going up.

So for now, there's no need to change anything based on this headline.

We'll know more on 28 October, when the Autumn Budget is announced.

And I'll be here to explain what it actually means for you and your business. 👀

BUDGET WATCH 03 👀

35 MILIARDÓW FUNTÓW. Spora kwota, prawda?

What actually happens when you become my client?

If you've never worked with an accountant before, you might wonder what actually happens after you get in touch.

Do you need to know exactly what service you need?
Do you need to have all your paperwork ready?
What happens next?

The answer is: you don't need to have everything figured out before you contact me.

We start with a conversation. I get to know what you do, how your business works and what you need help with.

Then I'll tell you exactly what I need from you: documents, access, ID checks, authorisations and anything else we need to get set up. No guessing and no sending me every document you've ever received “just in case”. 😄

But for me, working with a client isn't just about getting the admin done and submitting a tax return.

I want to understand your business too, what your normal expenses look like, how you work and what's changing. It means that when you ask me a question, I actually understand the context behind it.

And once we're working together, you can simply ask.

HMRC letter you don't understand?
Not sure about an expense?
Something changed in your business?

You don't need to wait until your tax return is due.

That's the whole point of having an accountant.

Później jasno powiem Ci, czego potrzebuję, jakie dokumenty przesłać, jaki dostęp będzie potrzebny i jakie formalności musimy załatwić. Bez zgadywania i wysyłania mi wszystkich dokumentów, jakie kiedykolwiek dostałeś „tak na wszelki wypadek”. 😄

Dzięki temu, kiedy o coś pytasz, znam kontekst i mogę odpowiedzieć konkretnie w odniesieniu do Twojej sytuacji.

A później?

BUDGET WATCH 02 👀

Three weeks to go until the Autumn Budget and the tax headlines are getting louder.

CGT, bank taxes, business rates… there’s already plenty being discussed.
But there’s a big difference between something being talked about and something actually being announced.

For now, we know the government wants to keep spending under control, but we still don’t know exactly what that will mean for taxes or small businesses.
So my advice for now? Don’t make business or tax decisions based on Budget rumours.

I’ll keep watching what’s confirmed, what looks credible and what’s still just speculation.

BUDGET WATCH 02 👀

Can you claim it as a business expense? 🤔

The answer isn't always as obvious as you might think.

Coffee with a client?
A thank-you gift?
A cleaner when you work from home?
Adding a weekend to a business trip?

Some of these might surprise you.

Swipe through the images to see the answers 👇

And if you're ever unsure whether something can be claimed, it's always better to check rather than assume.

📌 Part 2 coming later this month.

Czy można wrzucić to w koszty? 🤔

Kawa z klientem?
Prezent na podziękowanie?
Sprzątanie domu, jeśli pracujesz z domu?
A może przedłużenie wyjazdu służbowego o weekend?

Niektóre odpowiedzi mogą Cię zaskoczyć.

Przejrzyj grafiki i sprawdź 👇

A jeśli nie masz pewności, czy dany wydatek możesz zaliczyć do kosztów firmy, lepiej sprawdzić, niż zakładać.

📌 Część 2 pojawi się jeszcze w tym miesiącu.

The glamorous side of running an accounting practice ✨

Tax updates, client work, spreadsheets, working on the website… and plenty of coffee in between ☕️

Not quite the glamorous business-owner life you sometimes see online 😄

But I actually enjoy this part, learning, keeping up with changes and slowly building Space Accounting one step at a time.

Now, back to the spreadsheets. 📊

BUDGET WATCH 01 👀

The Autumn Budget is coming on 28 October and the headlines have already started.

Tax changes. Support for businesses. What might go up, what might change, what the Chancellor could announce...

The problem? At this stage, a lot of what we're seeing is still speculation.

So over the next few weeks I'll be keeping an eye on it and sharing the bits that could actually matter if you're self-employed or running a small business.

What's confirmed. What's being discussed. And what's still just a headline.

No predictions presented as facts. 😄

BUDGET WATCH 01 👀

28/09/2026

January might still feel a long way away, but if your 2025/26 Self Assessment still needs doing, now is actually a pretty good time to think about it. 😄

Doing it earlier gives you time to find missing documents, ask questions and sort out anything unexpected without the January rush.

But there's another benefit that I think is even more useful:

You know how much tax you need to pay.

Submitting your tax return early doesn't mean you have to pay the tax immediately. The normal payment deadline is still 31 January.

It simply means you know the figure earlier and have more time to plan for it.

Much nicer than finding out in January. 😄

So if your Self Assessment has been sitting somewhere near the bottom of your to-do list since April, September might be a good time to move it up a little.

Wcześniejsze rozliczenie oznacza przede wszystkim więcej czasu i wcześniejszą informację, ile podatku masz do zapłaty.

Something I got wrong when I started Space Accounting…

I thought I had to make the business look bigger than it actually was.

Everything had to look polished and very “professional”. Even writing a simple post could take me forever because I'd read it again and again wondering if it sounded business-like enough. 😄

But over time I've realised something.

Space Accounting isn't a big accounting firm.

It's me.

If you send an email, I'm the one reading it.

If you have a question, you'll speak to me.

And when I'm working on your accounts, I'm the person actually sitting there doing the work.

And I've realised I really like it that way.

I don't need Space Accounting to look bigger than it is. I'd much rather people know exactly who they're working with.

So I'm getting a little more comfortable showing the person behind the business too.

And yes… that means you'll probably be seeing my face around here a bit more often. 😄☕
