๐Ÿšจ *Running Multiple Businesses? HMRC Might Be Watching* ๐Ÿšจ

Ever wondered if you can split one business into several smaller ones to stay under the VAT threshold? ๐Ÿค”

It's a question we get asked a LOT โ€” so let's break it down ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ’ท *The ยฃ90,000 Question*
The VAT registration threshold is currently ยฃ90,000. Once your turnover crosses that, you MUST register โ€” no way around it.

Some business owners try to get clever by splitting operations across multiple companies to keep each one individually below the line.

โš ๏ธ *But here's the catch...*

HMRC can step in and issue a "Notice of Direction" โ€” treating all your separate businesses as ONE, if they find:

โœ… Financial links
โœ… Economic links
โœ… Organisational links

(All three need to be proven โ€” not just one!)

๐ŸŸข *Is splitting ever OK?*

Yes! If it's done for real commercial reasons โ€” not just to dodge VAT. You'll need proper proof like:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Separate bank accounts
๐Ÿ‘‰ Independent invoicing
๐Ÿ‘‰ Distinct record-keeping
๐Ÿ‘‰ Genuine operational separation

๐Ÿ”ด *What raises red flags?*

๐Ÿšฉ Shared bank accounts
๐Ÿšฉ Same management team
๐Ÿšฉ Same premises
๐Ÿšฉ Customers can't tell the businesses apart
๐Ÿšฉ Businesses can't survive on their own

Fun fact: just being a family business doesn't automatically make it "artificial" in HMRC's eyes! ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

โš–๏ธ *The bottom line*

Your paperwork needs to match reality. If HMRC believes it's just a tax dodge, they CAN and WILL investigate โ€” and reverse your VAT-free setup.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ Did you know your business could be LOSING money on VAT you're entitled to claim back?

Most business owners either miss legitimate VAT reclaimsโ€ฆ or accidentally claim things they shouldn't. Here's your quick cheat sheet ๐Ÿ‘‡

โœ… SIMPLIFIED RECEIPTS (Under ยฃ250)
Fuel, parking, retail buys? A basic receipt is all you need โ€” supplier name, VAT number, date, total & VAT rate. Your company name doesn't even need to be on it!

โœ… STAFF TRAVEL & MEALS
Away from your usual workplace? Hotels & meals = reclaimable.
๐Ÿšซ Normal commuting to work = NOT reclaimable

โš–๏ธ MIXED USE (Business + Personal)
Mobile phone bill, home utilities while working from home โ€” only the business % of VAT can be reclaimed.

JUST REGISTERED FOR VAT?
You can still claim on earlier costs:
๐Ÿ“ฆ Goods/assets you still have โ†’ up to 4 years back
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Services โ†’ up to 6 months back

๐Ÿšซ CLIENT ENTERTAINMENT
Sorry โ€” this one's a hard NO. Zero VAT recovery on entertaining clients or suppliers, no exceptions.
๐ŸŽ‰ BUT your staff Christmas party? That IS reclaimable! ๐ŸŽ„

๐Ÿšฉ FLAT RATE SCHEME (FRS)
Generally no VAT reclaim on purchases โ€” UNLESS it's a single capital asset costing ยฃ2,000+ (including VAT).

โš ๏ธ Please note: this is general guidance only. Always check your specific situation with a qualified accountant or tax advisor before making any claims.

๐Ÿšจ IMPORTANT UPDATE: HMRC to Automatically Sign Up MTD Taxpayers from September 2026 ๐Ÿšจ

Are you a sole trader or landlord who should already be using Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Taxโ€ฆ but haven't signed up yet?

Here's what you need to know ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“Œ WHAT'S CHANGING
From September 2026, HMRC will start automatically signing up taxpayers who should be using MTD for the 2026โ€“27 tax year but haven't enrolled. This will happen in stages over the coming months.

โœ… WHY SIGN UP YOURSELF FIRST?
Signing up now means:
โœ”๏ธ Your MTD details are correct from day one
โœ”๏ธ You prepare in your own time
โœ”๏ธ No surprises when HMRC gets in touch

๐Ÿ“Š THE NUMBERS SO FAR
๐Ÿ‘ฅ 570,000+ sole traders & landlords have already signed up
๐Ÿ“ˆ 70,000+ joined in just ONE week
โš ๏ธ Around 294,000 taxpayers still haven't registered
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 436,000+ have filed their first quarterly update

WHAT ABOUT PENALTIES?
๐ŸŸข 2026โ€“27: No penalty points for late quarterly updates
๐Ÿ”ด From 6 April 2027: Points-based penalties kick in
1 point per missed deadline
โ–ช๏ธ 4 points = ยฃ200 fine
Points expire with good compliance over time

๐Ÿ’ก Don't wait to be contacted โ€” check your status today and stay ahead of the deadline!

๐Ÿคฐ MATERNITY LEAVE MYTH-BUSTER ๐Ÿคฐ

"I can't contact an employee while they're on maternity leave, right?"

WRONG! โŒ

This is one of the most common misunderstandings employers have โ€” and it can actually cause more harm than good. Let's clear it up ๐Ÿ‘‡

โœ… You CAN (and often SHOULD) stay in touch during maternity leave โ€” especially if something important comes up, like a possible redundancy or a workplace transfer.

โœ… Plan ahead together. Before leave starts, agree on:
๐Ÿ“ž How best to contact them
๐Ÿ“ง A personal email, if work systems won't be accessible
๐Ÿ“… Whether to use Keeping In Touch (KIT) days

โœ… Redundancy? You MUST consult. Even during maternity leave. Even during pregnancy-related sickness. Even on a fixed-term contract. No exceptions.

That means talking through:
๐Ÿ”น Why the redundancy is happening
๐Ÿ”น Any suitable alternative roles (they get priority!)
๐Ÿ”น How selection criteria were applied
๐Ÿ”น How the assessment was carried out

โš ๏ธ Here's the trap: some employers stay quiet "to avoid worrying" the employee. Kind intentions โ€” but it can still be discrimination and make the whole process unfair in the eyes of the law.

๐Ÿ’ก Bottom line: Communication + sensitivity + fairness = getting it right.

๐Ÿ’ฐ SIPPs Explained: 10 Things Worth Knowing! ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Ever wondered how much control you actually have over your pension? ๐Ÿค”

A Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) lets YOU choose where your retirement money is invested โ€” but there are some important rules to know first. Here's a simple breakdown ๐Ÿ‘‡

A personal pension where you pick your own investments โ€” shares, funds, ETFs, bonds & more ๐Ÿ“Š

Platform fees, fund charges & trading costs โ€” these vary a lot, so shop around!

From age 55 (57 from 2028) โ€” take 25% tax-free, then draw an income while the rest keeps growing ๐ŸŒฑ

You can usually transfer other pensions in โ€” just check for exit fees or valuable guarantees first! ๐Ÿ”„

Some employers will pay straight into your SIPP โ€” it doesn't hurt to ask! ๐Ÿข

It goes to whoever you nominate ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Tax-free if you're under 75. IHT-free until April 2027.

If you or someone you know works on a zero hours contract, this affects you. ๐Ÿ‘‡

The UK government is consulting on major reforms under the *Employment Rights Act 2025* โ€” and it could reshape how millions of people work.

โœ…
Qualifying workers โ€” including those placed through agencies โ€” could get the right to:
๐Ÿ”น Guaranteed hours, based on what they actually work
๐Ÿ”น Reasonable notice before a shift is added or changed
๐Ÿ”น Payment if a shift is cancelled or cut short at short notice

The goal? Ending what the government calls "one-sided flexibility," where workers carry all the risk of unpredictable hours.

Government figures estimate businesses could face up to *ยฃ2.9 billion a year* in compliance costs โ€” covering guaranteed hours, shift notice systems, and cancellation payments.

Many are already adapting โ€” some are moving toward guaranteed hours voluntarily, while others are stepping back from zero hours contracts altogether or turning to agency staff instead.

Retail, hospitality and leisure sectors โ€” plus younger and gig economy workers โ€” are expected to be affected the most, on both sides of this debate.

Working in this heatwave? Here's what employers need to know.

With temperatures hitting 38ยฐC and amber heat alerts in force, it's not just uncomfortable โ€” it's something employers have a duty to take seriously.

Here's the deal ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐ŸŒก๏ธ There's no legal "too hot to work" temperature in the UK. But employers do have to keep things "reasonable" and look after their staff's wellbeing.

โš ๏ธ If employees genuinely believe conditions are unsafe, they're protected by law if they refuse to work. Best to deal with heat complaints properly rather than dismiss them.

๐Ÿ’ง Small things make a big difference:
- Plenty of drinking water
- Working air con / fans where possible
- A bit of flexibility on dress code

๐Ÿ  Working from home doesn't mean employers are off the hook either โ€” checking in on remote staff matters just as much.

๐Ÿค Pregnant employees and those with health conditions may need extra support โ€” more breaks, cooler spaces, or short-term flexibility.

๐Ÿš† Heat can mess with commutes too (slower trains, road issues) โ€” a little flexibility goes a long way.

๐Ÿ“‹ And if absences spike when it's sunny? Don't assume the worst โ€” just check in properly first.

Stay safe out there! ๐Ÿงก

In offices or similar environments, the temperature in workplaces must be reasonable.

๐Ÿ“ข Big news for UK businesses looking to go public! ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

The UK's financial regulator has just made it easier and cheaper for companies to list on the London Stock Exchange.

From 5 August 2026, the FCA has scrapped the old 7-day waiting period that used to apply to connected research during the IPO process. This rule had been in place since 2018 but, according to the regulator, it was adding cost and complexity without really delivering the benefits it was meant to.

โœ… Here's what's changing:
โ€ข No more mandatory 7-day wait for connected research before an IPO
Simpler information-sharing rules for companies and firms involved
Working with independent analysts is now optional, not required โ€” companies can arrange this commercially if they choose

Why does this matter? ๐Ÿค”
The changes are designed to lower costs, reduce risk, and make London a more attractive place to list โ€” especially after a run of major companies chose to list elsewhere in recent years.

A senior FCA director said the aim is to make the UK's listing rules more efficient, to help UK capital markets grow and stay competitive on the world stage.
