The start of Q4 is a practical point to check whether the books need a tidy-up before year-end pressure builds.
Not all bookkeeping problems announce themselves. Some accumulate quietly across the year: a bank account that has fallen behind, coding that has drifted from the agreed structure, payroll journals that were not posted for a couple of months, supplier statements that do not match what is in the accounts.
Individually, none of these feel critical. Together, they make the year-end considerably harder and the management accounts less reliable for the remainder of the year.
The most practical time to address them is now, with three months remaining rather than one. A bookkeeping review and cleanup is considerably faster when the backlog is a few months old rather than twelve.
