This years ICB Practice Licence arrived this morning … I’ve only just realised I’ve just started my 20th year in practice 🎉!

15/10/2026

Yesterday I spent the day at the Xero Roadshow at Aerospace Bristol, and the talks were held under Concorde. Not a bad backdrop for a day of bookkeeping chat!

A lot of it was about AI, and I’ll be honest, it’s something I’ve been a bit nervous about. I worry about it getting things wrong or going off and doing its own thing. I came away feeling a little less scared, though, and here’s why.

I got thinking about Concorde. Imagine seeing a passenger plane flying faster than the speed of sound for the first time. Plenty of people must have had their doubts. But it earned its place through proper training, checks and procedures around it, not by being left to get on with it.

I think AI is the same. It can be really useful, but it needs a good harness around it and a real person checking the work. Your bookkeeping and VAT will always have a human making the final call here. 😊

Anyone else feeling wary of AI, or have you jumped in with both feet?

🎉 I've been nominated for Ignition's Top 50 Women in Accounting 2026! 🥂

To whoever put my name forward (I think I have a good guess 👀), thank you. It really made my day.

Feeling proud just to be nominated.

At the weekend I stood in a layby and watched Greg James cycle past on his tandem! He’s cycling 1000km from Weymouth to Edinburgh on ‘The Longest Ride’, for Comic Relief.
Cycling a long way is a lot easier when you’ve got someone on the back of the bike helping you pedal.
Running a business is the same. Trying to do everything yourself can feel like a very long uphill climb. But when you’ve got the right support behind you, things move a lot more smoothly.
That’s exactly what a good bookkeeper should feel like. Someone quietly helping you keep things moving so you can focus on where you're going.
You can try to do everything yourself … but it’s a lot easier when someone’s helping you pedal.
You’re still steering the bike… but you don’t have to do all the pedalling on your own. Who’s helping you pedal in your business?

If you would like to support Greg’s challenge – here’s the link

My mind is buzzing and I’m still absolutely knackered.
Two days in London at Accountex 2025. I learnt so much and listened to some incredible thought provoking speakers Kathryn Frimond, Leanda Daddow, Stacey Smith and Emma James.

There were so many software suppliers to catch up with and find out what tools I can implement to improve my practice efficiencies. Loved meeting the team from Work Experience for Bookkeepers and Accountants with Hey Monika.

Of course there were the parties too! A gift from one supplier as we left was chocolates and recovery kit …. this may have been put to good use on Thursday morning! Who says bookkeepers and accountants don’t know how to party?!?

But best of all was catching up with Jo, Zoe, Gill and so many of the members of The 6 Figure Bookkeeper, both old and new. You are all amazing … especially my business besties Laura (LG Virtual Services) and Steph (Books & Balance). I’m so grateful to be part of such amazing community.
Nicola Fallon (Virtual Accounts & Taxes), Nadia, Kristy, Claire, Libby, Kath, Fiona, Annabel, Beatrix, Veshali, Charlotte and Nicola.

Sorry to those I haven’t tagged … I did say I was knackered 🤯😴

What does a Bookkeeper Actually Do?

You’ve probably heard the term “bookkeeper,” but what does it actually mean?

A bookkeeper does more than just track transactions. We’re the financial organisers behind the scenes, keeping your business running smoothly. Here’s a snapshot of what we do:

- Track and Categorise Expenses: Every penny in and out is recorded and organised.
- Reconcile Accounts: We ensure your bank accounts match your records.
- Prepare Financial Reports: Profit & Loss, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow—we turn numbers into insights.
- Support Tax Prep: We keep your books in order so tax season is a breeze.
- Cash Flow Monitoring: Helping you avoid nasty surprises by staying ahead of your finances.
- Provide Financial Clarity: We give you the confidence to make informed decisions about your business.

It’s not just about the numbers. It’s about giving you peace of mind and freeing you up to focus on growing your business.

Need help staying on top of your books? Let’s chat about how I can make bookkeeping stress-free for you. DM me today!

I had the best time on Friday celebrating the 5th Birthday of 6 Figure Bookkeeper in the amazing, and local to me, city of Bath. I was also presented with the Client Impact Award. It is such a privilege to be surrounded by 50 of the most talented and conscientious bookkeepers and accountants. Thank you Jo Wood and Zoe Whitman for creating such a supportive and collaborative group.
