đź’ˇ Are the young people in your life financially ready for the future?

We're hosting our next workshop on Saturday, 18th of April at 2:00 pm at Caffe Mamma on Kew Road in Richmond. We would love to see you there!

Designed for ages 16+, this hands-on session covers everything young people need to start thinking smarter about money:

âś… Different ways of investing (stocks, bonds, property & more)
âś… Why some investments grow faster than others
âś… How to understand risk vs. reward

Financial literacy is one of the greatest gifts you can give a young person and it's never too early to start.

Most teenagers will take exams in subjects they may never use.
Very few will ever be taught how money actually works.

This Sunday, Vicky and I were honoured to play our part in changing that by presenting to a fantastic group of secondary school students in Tunbridge Wells.

Watching them engage with saving vs investing, compounding, and smart money habits was powerful.

These students asked brilliant questions and threw themselves into the activities. Honestly—they would give many adults a run for their money!

A huge thank you to Lidgey and Peter for facilitating & hosting such a welcoming event and to Vicky for her continued support.

We don’t have a knowledge problem when it comes to money.
We have an exposure problem.

Big money habits start small. 🌱

I’m really pleased to see my passion for financial education highlighted by M&G, especially during Global Money Week.

Supporting young people to build confidence with money is something I care deeply about, and I’m proud to be part of conversations that help make financial decisions feel clearer and less overwhelming.

McKeown - thanks for your continued support

Global Money Week is a timely reminder of the importance of financial education and the role it plays in building confidence with money.

We spoke to one of our M&G Advice Partners, Gary McKeown, about why supporting young people with financial education matters so much to him:

“The challenges young people face today are very different from when many of us were growing up. I left university with no student debt, but today’s graduates in England face average debts of £53,000*.
Twenty years ago in London, the average home cost 8.4 times the median salary. Today, that figure is closer to 12 times — a rise of over 40% that has materially changed affordability for young people starting out.
That’s why, alongside my wife Vicky, I run free monthly financial education sessions for teenagers - helping build confidence early so financial decisions feel less overwhelming and support long‑term wellbeing.”

Thoughtful financial advice helps turn understanding into confidence - supporting better decisions at every stage of life. Speak to one of our expert financial advisers and see how we can help https://brnw.ch/21x0PTo

At 2pm on Saturday, while many were watching England vs Ireland,
a group of teens and young adults travelled through match-day traffic from Weybridge and surrounding areas to attend a Financial Education session in Richmond.

That level of intent really stood out.

What made this session especially meaningful was that it was genuinely parent-led.

Financial education was a topic raised within the parent community — showing a clear desire from both young people and parents to make this happen.

We also had a mix of university students studying economics and finance, alongside young people already in part-time jobs.

This made the discussions highly experiential — grounded in real payslips, real earnings, and real-life decisions rather than just theory.

Some questions naturally touched on wider topics like politics and the economy, which we appropriately steered back to financial fundamentals.

The curiosity behind those questions was encouraging and reflective of young people thinking critically about the world around them.

This wasn’t about products — it was about practical financial understanding.

We covered:
• Wants vs Needs
• Saving vs Investing
• The power of starting early
• Compounding habits
• Payslips (gross vs net)
• Tax and National Insurance

The quality of the questions about money, work, and future decisions was exceptional — the kind many adults only ask much later in life.

As a financial planner, and a parent to teenagers, I strongly believe financial education works best when supported both at home and within the community.

A big thank you to the Weybridge youth community group — and the parents behind it — for their engagement, appreciation, and commitment.
We’ve already confirmed a follow-up session for April.

Strong financial futures don’t start with income.
They start with awareness, mindset, and education.

"My child left the house as an 11-year-old and came back sounding like a 14+ year-old!”

That’s what one parent said after Sunday’s financial education session at Caffe Mamma in Richmond. (Thanks Jose and Staff!)

Vicky McKeown and I spent valuable time with local kids decoding the mystery of payslips — tax bands, pensions, student loans, and why the top line salary you’re quoted is rarely what actually lands in your bank account.

The breakthrough moment? Watching 11-year-olds confidently calculate income tax at different salary levels.

One of them then asked:
“So… what does the government actually do with all this tax!?”

Exactly the kind of question we want young people asking.

When money makes sense early, confidence grows — and good habits tend to stick for life.

This was our final Financial Education session of 2025 — but it’s very much not the end of the story.

In 2026, we’re planning to expand these workshops so more young people can access practical, real-world financial education. If you’re connected to schools, youth groups, or community spaces that care about building life skills early, we’d love to hear from you.

Watch this space!
