It’s always good to see more positive news around the UK economy although I often think the national picture only tells part of the story. What really matters to most people is their own economy. Their income, their mortgage, their business, their family, their tax position, their plans and the people who rely on them.

That’s the bit you actually live with day to day.

A more positive outlook might give people the confidence to make decisions again, which is no bad thing. But before making big moves, it’s worth looking at whether your own financial position is properly set up.

Are you protected if your income stops? Is your business too dependent on you? Are your investments, pension, protection and estate planning all working in the same direction?

It shouldn’t be and doesn’t need to be overcomplicated. It just needs to be looked at properly.
Headlines come and go, but your own financial security is much more personal.

When business is going well, most owners quite rightly focus on the next opportunity. I’m definitely guilty of that at times.

New clients, new staff, better premises, improved systems, bigger contracts. That’s the exciting side of running a business, and it’s often what gets people out of bed in the morning.

But I do think there’s another conversation that gets missed.

What happens if the person at the centre of it all suddenly can’t be there?

In a lot of owner-managed businesses, the owner is still the main driver. They know the clients, they understand the numbers, they hold the relationships and they make the key decisions.
That’s normal. It’s how many good businesses are built. But it’s also a risk.

If something happened, would the business have the cash and structure to carry on? Would your family be protected? Would your fellow directors know what happens next?
These aren’t questions to scare people. They’re questions to help people protect what they’ve built.
Because a thriving business is a brilliant thing. But it still needs a safety net.

My wife and I have recently welcomed a new baby, so life in our house is currently a mix of happiness, nappies, broken sleep and wondering where the last three hours went.

It’s brilliant, but it does make you think.

When your family grows, the financial side of life feels less theoretical. It’s not just “we should probably sort that at some point.” It becomes much more real.

You start thinking about whether the mortgage is properly covered. Whether your income would be replaced if you couldn’t work. Whether your family would be looked after if the worst happened. If you run a business, you also start thinking about whether that business could keep going without you for a while.

They’re not nice things to think about, but they are the sort of things that matter when people depend on you.

That’s why I’ve always believed protection is one of the most important parts of financial planning.
It’s not exciting. It’s not glamorous. But for the right family, at the right time, it can be everything.

It does feel like there’s a little more confidence around at the moment.

I’ve had a few conversations recently with business owners and families who are starting to think a bit more positively again. Not wildly optimistic, but certainly more open to planning, investing, growing, moving, hiring — all the things that tend to come back onto the table when the economy feels a bit steadier.

And that’s good. We’ve all had enough doom and gloom.

But one thing I’d say is this: when things start feeling better, that’s often the best time to check the basics.

Because when life is moving forward, you tend to take more on. A bigger mortgage. More staff. More responsibility. More people relying on you.

That’s usually when protection, income planning and business continuity matter most.
Not because you’re expecting anything to go wrong, but because you’ve worked too hard to leave it all exposed.

A good plan shouldn’t just help you grow. It should make sure the people and business you care about are protected along the way.

I see quite a few people who are doing well on paper. Good income, steady career, everything looks as it should from the outside.

But when we actually go through things together, there isn’t much structure behind it. Money is coming in, but it’s not really being directed anywhere with purpose.

That’s normally where a few small adjustments can have a big impact over time. It’s not about cutting back or changing your lifestyle, it’s just about making sure what you’ve got is working properly for you.

A lot of people I speak to are starting to notice changes with their parents.

Nothing major, just little things that make you think a bit more about the future and what might be needed down the line.

The tricky part is that most families don’t talk about money, or later life planning until they absolutely have to, and by that point decisions tend to be rushed.

Having those conversations earlier, in a calm way, makes a huge difference. It gives everyone more choice and usually takes away a lot of stress later on.

It’s not always an easy chat to start, but it’s one of the most valuable ones you can have.

Protection is one of those topics that gets pushed down the list.

Some people don’t know about it or what it can protect and others know it’s important, especially when you’ve got a family or people depending on you, but it never feels urgent enough to deal with today.

There’s a lot being said at the moment around tax, pensions and changes coming through, especially if you’re a business owner or earning well.

Some of it is worth paying attention to and some of it is just noise, but the difference I see time and time again is that people who take a look early tend to have more options.

The ones who leave it usually end up reacting later when there’s less flexibility.

It shouldn’t be another thing on your to do list either, it just means understanding what might affect you and making a few sensible decisions ahead of time.

It’s a much calmer way of dealing with it.

The value of a pension can go down as well as up. You could get back less than you invested.

There’s a point, usually somewhere in your 30s or 40s, where everything seems to land at once.
You’re pushing on in your career, you’ve got a young family to think about and at the same time your parents are starting to need a bit more support.

Financially, it’s a lot to juggle, and what tends to happen is planning gets pushed to one side because it feels like a job you need a full day and a clear head for.

If you run your own business, you’ll know how much sits on your shoulder’s day to day. I certainly do – I am a business owner and I work with people like me.

What’s interesting is how many people I speak to who have built something really solid, but have never quite got round to asking the simple question… what happens if I’m not there for a period of time?

Not suggesting the worst, just practically. Income might stop or dip, but the outgoings don’t. Staff still need paying, the business still needs running and your family are still relying on you.

Most people are aware of it, it just gets pushed down the list because everything else feels more immediate.
