Self Assessment reminder: the second payment on account is due by 31 July if this applies to you.

Payments on account are not an extra tax bill. They are payments towards your next Self Assessment bill, usually based on last year’s tax.

That does not make them any more pleasant, but it does make them easier to plan for.

Check your HMRC online account or statement, make sure you know the amount due, and do not leave payment until the last possible minute.

Facing the number early gives you more options.

Employers: Class 1A National Insurance on benefits for 2025/26 needs attention this month.

The payment deadline is 19 July if paying by cheque, or 22 July if paying electronically.

A common practical issue is the payment reference. If the reference is wrong, HMRC may not allocate the payment where you expect it to go.

Before paying, check:

the amount due
the payment method
the Accounts Office reference
the year/month reference required
that the payment will arrive on time

A small admin mistake can create a lot of unnecessary chasing

MTD for Income Tax is no longer “something for later”

If you are a sole traders and or landlord and in the first MTD group from 6 April 2026, your first quarterly update period has now ended.

With the first update dealine 7th August 2026, July is the month to check the list in our post.

The quarterly update is a summary, not a full tax return, but messy records still make it harder than it needs to be.

Get the system calm now, before it becomes a deadline problem.

Today is a key date for employers with reportable expenses and benefits.

P11D and P11D(b) reporting for the 2025/26 tax year is due by 6 July 2026.

That can include things like company cars, private medical cover, beneficial loans and other taxable benefits, depending on the circumstances.

The important bit: do not guess.

Benefits reporting needs proper records, correct treatment and employee copies where required. Clear records now save awkward questions later.

Employers: if you need a PAYE Settlement Agreement for 2025/26, this is one to deal with now.

A PSA can be useful where you want to settle the tax and National Insurance on certain employee expenses or benefits directly with HMRC.

The deadline to apply for, or amend, a PSA for 2025/26 is 5 July 2026.

This is not the job to leave and hope it sorts itself. Check what was provided to staff, check what is already taxed through payroll, and get the position clear.

Need a second pair of eyes? Speak to us before the deadline.

July has a few important tax dates hiding in it, especially for employers and Self Assessment clients.

This month, keep an eye on the above dates.

The aim is not to panic. It is to know what is due, check the records, and deal with it early.

If one of these dates affects you and you are not sure what needs doing, please ask before the deadline is on top of you.

Thankfully, modern bookkeeping is a little quieter.

But the principle still stands: your records should be clear enough to explain, check and rely on.

No dramatic ledger readings required.

For limited company directors, this is a big one.

The company bank account is not a personal purse.

A few personal costs here, a few transfers there, and suddenly the year-end records are messy. That can affect director’s loan accounts, dividend planning, tax, and how clearly you understand the business.

Good habits make a difference:

Use the business account for business costs.
Record anything unusual straight away.
Keep dividend and salary paperwork clear.
Avoid leaving “I’ll sort it later” transactions unexplained.

Future you will be grateful.

Well… this happened.

I’m not quite sure I have the words for this one.

We are officially an Accounting Excellence Awards 2026 finalist — and I’ll be honest, this means so much to me.

As a small business owner, I’ve been incredibly lucky and grateful to have received recognition at a number of awards events over the past three years. Every single one has meant something and has given me a moment to stop, reflect and feel proud of how far we’ve come.

But this one feels different.

This is recognition from within our own industry. This is being named alongside some of the absolute best of the best in the UK accountancy profession. Firms, individuals and teams who are doing incredible things, raising standards and shaping the future of accountancy.

To be included in that company is genuinely overwhelming.

When you’re building a business, you spend so much time looking forward. Thinking about the next client, the next deadline, the next challenge, the next improvement. You don’t always stop to take in what you’re creating.

So today, I’m taking a moment.

A moment to feel proud of the practice we are building.
A moment to recognise the hard work, care and determination that goes into what we do every day.
A moment to appreciate the clients who trust us, support us and allow us to be part of their journey.
And a huge moment to thank the team, because none of this happens without you.

This recognition means the world because it reflects everything we are working towards: building a forward-thinking accountancy practice that genuinely makes a difference to the people and businesses we support.

Whatever happens next, being named an Accounting Excellence Awards finalist is something I will never take for granted.

Thank you, Accounting Excellence Awards, for this incredible recognition.

I’m proud, grateful and, honestly, still letting it sink in.

Before everyone starts booking summer leave, it is worth checking the basics.

Small payroll issues have a habit of becoming bigger problems when everyone is busy, away or trying to remember what was agreed three months ago.

Tidy records now. Fewer headaches later.
