🚗 HMRC Mileage Rates Are Increasing for 2026/27 💷

After being frozen for around 15 years, the tax-free business mileage rate is increasing from 45p to 55p per mile (first 10,000 miles).

For business owners and employees using their own vehicle for work, this means:
✅ Higher tax-free mileage claims
✅ Better support with rising fuel and motoring costs
✅ More tax relief available

About time too… although with fuel prices lately, your car probably still drinks more than you do 🍻😂

Great to be back at Simply Business Club today — always a brilliant way to start the day ☕and good food

Really interesting discussions around Making Tax Digital (MTD) — a big change that will affect all sole traders over the next couple of years.

A lot of people still aren’t fully aware of what’s coming, so it’s great to be having these conversations early and helping businesses get prepared rather than caught out.

Trust is everything in accountancy.

I read this week about a case where an accountant was sentenced after stealing more than £26,000 from a local charity she had been hired to help.

The organisation had engaged her to pay a small HMRC bill and manage payroll. Instead, funds were diverted into her own account.

It’s upsetting — especially when the victim is a food bank supporting vulnerable members of the community.

But cases like this also highlight something important:
🔹 Why internal controls matter
🔹 Why segregation of duties is essential
🔹 Why trustees must never share banking authentication codes
🔹 Why professional ethics are non-negotiable

As accountants, we are trusted with access to people’s livelihoods, businesses, and in this case, charitable funds.
Most of us take that responsibility seriously.

Good accountancy isn’t just about tax returns and payroll.
It’s about integrity. Transparency. Accountability.

If you’re running a charity or small business, make sure:
• You have dual authorisation on payments
• Bank reconciliations are independently reviewed
• Access levels are restricted
