Investing nearly £2 million in communities across the UK.

Over the past year, we’ve invested £1.97 million in socio-economic initiatives, supporting 129 projects near our 14 sites and helping communities to thrive.

From education and youth employment to wellbeing, sustainability and local business growth, our funding is creating lasting impact where it matters most.

A few highlights:

✅ £30k to Gympanzees to support a new inclusive centre for disabled children and young people
✅ £95k to expand youth employment support across East Suffolk
✅ £37k helping grow creative industries at Craft Town Scotland
✅ £125k boosting skills and training for local businesses in Caithness
✅ £351k supporting regeneration in North Anglesey, unlocking £8m in further investment

This is part of our ongoing commitment to leaving a positive social and economic legacy in the communities around our sites.

As our CEO, Rob Fletcher said: “By investing in local causes, we can create real, lasting opportunities – supporting people, skills and wellbeing where it matters most.”

Site Spotlight: Hunterston B begins its next chapter

On 1 April, Hunterston B (North Ayrshire) made history as the first advanced gas cooled reactor (AGR) site to transfer from EDF to Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) for decommissioning.

This milestone reflects years of close collaboration – and it marks the start of the site’s decommissioning journey. More than 240 EDF colleagues transferred successfully and are now part of the NRS family (and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority group).

Decommissioning Hunterston B safely and efficiently is important for the UK, the local community, and the wider nuclear sector.

And the site’s legacy is extraordinary: over 46 years, Hunterston B generated enough zero carbon electricity to power every home in Scotland for 30 years.

✅ During its operation:

• £13.3bn+ contributed to the UK economy
• 2,100+ jobs supported each year on average
• 172m tonnes of carbon emissions avoided – roughly the same as taking every car off UK roads for almost 2.5 years

Milestones that set the pace:

• Electricity generation ended on 7 January 2022
• Formally confirmed fuel free in April 2025 – the first AGR to reach this point
• Transfer delivered on time and on budget, creating a benchmark for what comes next

The defueling programme was completed in under three years – from first fuel removal to the final fuel flask leaving site for Sellafield. A huge achievement made possible through strong industry collaboration.

We’re looking forward to sharing updates as Hunterston B moves through the next phase of its journey.

Dounreay has recently welcomed five new Health Physics Surveyor trainees to site.

The trainees have now begun an intensive two-year training programme that will see them work towards becoming fully qualified surveyors, including achieving a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Radiation Protection.

Through a structured mix of theoretical learning and hands-on practical experience, they’ll build the skills and knowledge needed to become valued members of our Health Physics and Decommissioning team.
