One of the best things about working for myself?

I get to decide what kind of business I want to build.

And for me, that means creating something that feels calm, approachable and genuinely helpful.

I don't want Harvey Bookkeeping & Accounts to be the place where you feel embarrassed because your bookkeeping is behind.

I don't want you to feel like you need to understand all the accounting terminology before you can ask a question.

And I definitely don't want numbers to feel like something you have to fear.

Because I've worked with enough businesses over the years to know that sometimes, it's not that someone doesn't care about their finances.

They're simply busy.

They're trying to run their business, look after their family, keep up with everything else life throws at them… and the bookkeeping gets pushed further and further down the list.

No judgement. No scary jargon. No making you feel silly for asking a question.

Just helping you get things organised and understand what's actually happening in your business.

That's the kind of business I want to build.

And that's what you'll find happening from this little corner of my office. ā˜•šŸ’»

What does ā€œgood serviceā€ mean to you when you work with another business? šŸ‘‡

✨ A little Harvey Bookkeeping & Accounts update… ✨

If you’ve visited my website recently, you might notice things look a little different! šŸ‘€

I’ve given Harvey Bookkeeping & Accounts a bit of a refresh — and I’m so happy with how it’s come together. 🌿

As my business has grown, so have the services I offer, so I wanted my website to reflect that too.

It now matches my refreshed branding and has a clearer look at how I can support sole traders and small businesses, from:

šŸ“š Bookkeeping
šŸ“Š Accounting & annual accounts
šŸ’· Payroll
🧾 VAT support
šŸ–„ļø Accounting software training
šŸ“‘ Self Assessment
šŸ”„ Bookkeeping catch-up & rescue work

But most importantly, I wanted it to still feel like me — friendly, approachable and jargon-free.

I’m a firm believer that your finances shouldn’t feel overwhelming, and I want my website to give you that same feeling from the moment you land on it. šŸ¤

Because apparently websites are never quite finished, I'm sure I will tweak it again in the future šŸ˜‚, but I’d love for you to have a look and let me know what you think.

And if you’re a small business owner who has been meaning to get your bookkeeping, accounts or payroll sorted… perhaps this is your little nudge. šŸ˜‰

Bookkeeping isn't just about keeping HMRC happy.

This is something I wish more business owners realised.

Of course, keeping your records up to date matters when it comes to VAT, tax returns and your other submissions.

But that's only one part of it.

Your bookkeeping can actually tell you what is happening in your business.

Are things getting busier?

Has something you introduced actually made a difference?

Are there certain months where your income drops?

Are your expenses creeping up?

Are you working harder but somehow ending up with less money?

Those answers are sitting in your numbers.

The problem is, if your bookkeeping only gets looked at when a deadline is approaching, you're looking backwards instead of using that information to make decisions.

And I completely understand why it happens.

You finish work.

You've got a family, dinner, emails, customers, washing, life...

And the last thing you want to do is sit down and reconcile transactions.

So the bookkeeping gets pushed to tomorrow.

Then next week.

Then suddenly you're staring at months of transactions thinking, where on earth do I even start?

That is why I don't see my role as simply entering numbers into software.

I want your bookkeeping to become something that works for you, rather than another job waiting for you at the end of the day.

Because being able to look at your figures and actually understand what they're telling you is a very different feeling from simply knowing that your records are ā€œdoneā€.

And that feeling of clarity is often what business owners are really looking for.

If you're interested in making more sense of your business finances, keep an eye out for my posts over the coming weeks – I'll be sharing more about what this can look like in real businesses.

A little peek behind the scenes at Harvey Bookkeeping & Accounts šŸ‘‹

This is where quite a lot of the magic happens.

Client bookkeeping, spreadsheets, emails, planning, coffee (very important!)… and probably far too many tabs open on my laptop. šŸ˜‚

I’ve always liked the idea that your workspace should make your working day feel easier, not add to the chaos.

And that’s probably a good reflection of how I like to work with clients too.

Simple. organised. no unnecessary jargon... And definitely no judgement if your books aren't quite where you'd like them to be.

Behind the scenes, there’s a lot more to running a bookkeeping business than just numbers on a screen — and I actually really enjoy that part.

So, this is where you’ll find me most days. ā˜•šŸ’»

Sunday night checklist:

☐ Dinner
☐ TV
☐ Relax
ā˜‘ 3 hours of bookkeeping

If your bookkeeping takes you three hours every Sunday night, something needs to change.

And no, I don't mean you need to become better at bookkeeping.
You have a business to run.

You shouldn't have to spend your precious evenings trying to remember which receipts you've uploaded, whether you've invoiced everyone, what that random payment was for, or whether you've somehow forgotten to do something important.

Good bookkeeping shouldn't feel like a weekly punishment.
It should give you a clear picture of what's happening in your business — without taking over your life.

Sometimes the answer is a better system.

Sometimes it's understanding your software properly.

Sometimes it's getting the backlog under control.

And sometimes… it's admitting that bookkeeping just isn't where you want to spend your time.

And that's okay.

You don't need to love your bookkeeping.

You just need to be able to trust your numbers.

If Sunday night bookkeeping has become part of your weekly routine, maybe it's time to change the routine.

What would you rather be doing with those three hours? šŸ‘‡

Hello! šŸ‘‹šŸ’š

Or, if we haven’t met yet… hi and welcome! 😊

I’m Laura – wife, mum of three, lover of a good book and someone who genuinely believes that business finances don’t have to be complicated.

I help sole traders and small business owners understand their numbers, keep on top of their accounts and, most importantly, know where they stand financially.

Because running your own business is hard enough without wondering whether you’re actually making money, how much you need to put aside for tax or what you should be doing next!
And that’s where I come in. 😊

Because bookkeeping isn’t just about entering figures into software.

It’s about giving you the information you need to make confident decisions.

Are you actually making a profit? šŸ¤”

Can you afford to take money out of the business?
Are your expenses creeping up?
How much should you be putting aside for tax?
Are you on track for the year?
And most importantly… do you know what’s happening with your money?
These are the things I want to help you understand.

With over 10 years of bookkeeping experience, I’ve seen how valuable good financial records can be - but I’ve also seen how easily bookkeeping can become something that gets pushed to the bottom of the list when you're busy running your business.

My role isn't just to keep your books tidy.

It’s to take the financial side of your business and make it feel simpler, clearer and more manageable šŸŽ‰

Whether you’re just starting out and want to get things set up properly, or you’ve been in business for a while and your bookkeeping has started to get on top of you, I’m here to help you get back in control.

If you're a sole trader or small business owner who wants to feel more confident about your finances, I’d love to connect.

Say a little hello in the comments below or pop me a DM - and if we’ve worked together before, I’d love to hear from you too! 🄰

✨ It’s all starting to feel real! ✨

My new business cards, leaflets and stickers have arrived — ready for networking, events and lots of conversations with fellow business owners.

There’s something quite exciting about seeing your business branding in your hands rather than just on a screen!

I’m looking forward to getting out there, meeting more people and building connections with other small business owners. šŸ’š

If you see me at a networking event, come and say hello — I promise I’m much more interested in chatting about your business than talking numbers! šŸ˜‰

You might be paying more tax than you need to....

One question...

When was the last time you checked whether you're claiming everything you're entitled to?

Most sole traders don't deliberately overpay tax...

They just miss expenses because nobody has ever explained what they can legitimately claim.

Over a year, that can add up to hundreds—or even thousands—of pounds.

If you're wondering whether you're leaving money on the table, I'd be happy to do a quick review of your current bookkeeping and point out anything obvious.

1. You avoid logging in.
2. You don't trust the numbers.
