A little look behind the scenes… 💚

You might know me as the face behind Harvey Bookkeeping & Accounts, but today I thought I'd share a little more about the person behind the spreadsheets! 😄

When I'm not busy helping business owners make sense of their numbers, there's a few things you'll probably find me doing…

🏉 Watching rugby – always a good excuse to get caught up in a match!

🏎️ Following Formula 1 – because apparently, I don't have enough going on without adding a bit of racing drama to the mix! 😂

📚 Getting lost in a good book – there's nothing quite like escaping into a different world for a little while.

🧵 Sewing – I love getting creative and making things, and I'm always thinking about what I could make next. I especially enjoy the idea of turning fabric into something useful or lovely to gift.

❤️ Spending time with my family – life with three little ones certainly keeps me busy, and family time is a big part of what matters most to me.

☕ Enjoying the little things – a quiet cuppa, a bit of time to recharge, or simply having a moment to myself when life allows!

Running my own business is a big part of my life, but there's so much more to me than bookkeeping. I'm a mum, a book lover, a rugby and F1 fan, and someone who enjoys getting creative whenever I can.

I think it's important to remember that behind every small business is a real person, juggling work, family, hobbies and everything else life throws at us. 💚

And that's something I can definitely relate to!

📢 MTD Income Tax – one month to go!

If you're already registered for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, the deadline for your second quarterly update is just ONE MONTH today – 7 November. 📅

And there’s something else worth knowing…

HMRC are now starting to identify sole traders who should be submitting quarterly updates but haven’t yet registered or started submitting them.

There may not be penalties for missing the quarterly updates during this first year of MTD, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. 👀

If you're unsure whether MTD for Income Tax applies to you, you haven't registered yet, or you’re simply feeling a little overwhelmed by what you need to do, please don’t leave it until the last minute.

This is why I never like to assume that a set of figures is right just because they've already been submitted.

A new client came to me wanting help with their bookkeeping, VAT returns and Self Assessment.

As I reviewed the information, something didn't quite add up.

The turnover figure being used on the tax return looked wrong.

So I started looking a little more closely.

Eventually, I found the issue.

VAT had been included in the turnover figure on the tax return.

That meant the turnover had been overstated – and consequently, the tax position was higher than it should have been.

This wasn't something that was obvious at first glance.

The numbers were there.

The return had been prepared.

But something didn't quite make sense.

And that little feeling of “hang on, this doesn't look right” is one of the things experience gives you.

It's knowing when to stop and investigate rather than simply accepting what's in front of you.

I've also had a Self-Assessment client come to me with her finances recorded on a spreadsheet.

It wasn't a fancy bookkeeping system.

It didn't need to be.

I was able to use the information she had already gathered, review it and then identify additional expenses that could be claimed.

Those came to a total of £1,000.
Different clients.
Different situations.
But the same principle.

Good bookkeeping and accounts aren't simply about recording what you're given.

It's about understanding the information, asking questions when something doesn't look right and making sure the figures tell the right story.

That's the part of my job that I genuinely enjoy.

And it's why I always say I'd rather have too much information and not need it than not have enough and have to go back and reconstruct everything later.

Apparently my brain didn't turn up today… 😂

Today has been one of those days where I have questioned whether I actually know what I'm doing. 😂

It started on the school run.

A teacher asked me about property rental expenses.

Except… I completely misheard her question.

Cue me standing there utterly confused for about 30 seconds, until she actually asked:

"Have I got the right person? You're a bookkeeper, aren't you?" 🤦‍♀️

At this point, I wasn't entirely sure myself. 😂

Now I have to answer the question because I've already been identified as the bookkeeper and suddenly there is immense pressure to redeem myself and prove that I do, in fact, know what I'm talking about.

And what does my brain decide to do?

Go completely blank.

Property rental expenses?

Absolutely no idea.

Wonderful.

Then, thankfully, an example pops into my head.

"This is it!" I'm thinking. "My brain has kicked in. I can answer the question. Thank the Lord!"

I give two examples.

Take a breath.

I'm about to give some more when one of the children needs to ask their teacher a very important question about a pen. 😂

No problem.

Except now there's a small queue of children waiting to speak to the teacher, so we mutually agree we'll pick up our conversation later and I head home.

The entire walk home (approximately 1km — not exactly 10 miles, but plenty of time to overthink 😅) I'm thinking:

1. She must think I'm absolutely shocking at my job.

2. Is she actually going to have any confidence in anything I say when we pick this conversation back up?

3. Where was I?! Clearly on another planet, because I definitely wasn't on this one. 😂

Then I stopped and thought…

It's OK.

It was 8:35am.

I hadn't consumed enough coffee.

And I was expecting to be thinking about whether my youngest son could take his guitar into school for his music lesson - not answering questions about property rental expenses!

Fast forward to my networking meeting in Oswestry with Women Who Business Community

A fellow networker comes over and says:

"Hi Lisa, I just wanted to catch up with you…"

It genuinely took me a good minute to register what was happening before I had to explain to the lovely Ruth that…

I'm not Lisa. 😂

Lisa Lloyd was, in fact, the lady in the grey jumper stood by the table at this moment in time.

So, I'm not quite sure why human interaction has been so challenging for me today. 😂

But perhaps it was actually a very good day to listen to a wonderful talk from Kate Collins about confidence and being unembarrassable.

Because clearly, I needed the reminder. 😂

We all have those days.

The days where our brain doesn't seem to work quite as quickly as usual.

The days where we say the wrong thing, forget something obvious, get someone's name wrong or just generally feel like we're winging it.

It doesn't mean we're bad at what we do.

It means we're human.

And sometimes… we just need more coffee. ☕😂

✨ One whole week since The MOMENTUM Event! ✨

It’s hard to believe it’s already been a week since I spent the day with the wonderful experts and community at The Women Who Worcestershire – MOMENTUM Event.

I was incredibly proud (and, if I’m honest, a little nervous!) to be a Table Expert, alongside Kasia, talking about Financial Foundations and why keeping order in your accounts is so important when you're running a business.

It was an honour to be trusted by Lisa to share my knowledge and experience with the community. Talking about something I know well sounds simple enough… but putting yourself out there in front of people is a very different story! 😂

And yet, once I got started, I genuinely had such a wonderful day.

Since rebuilding my business last year, I knew there would be changes I needed to make.

✨ My message
✨ My ideal clients
✨ My branding
✨ Making sure everything felt aligned
✨ And, probably the biggest one of all… becoming more visible and actually putting myself out there.

Being a Table Expert at MOMENTUM felt like a pretty big step in that journey.

I hope I managed to show a little of my knowledge, experience and, most importantly, what I can bring to the table (quite literally! 😉).

I’m definitely still working on the confidence side of being more visible, but I’m learning that sometimes you just have to say yes, step outside your comfort zone and see what happens.

And I’m so glad I did. 💚

A huge thank you to Lisa, Kasia and all the wonderful ladies who made the day so special - and to all the women I had the chance to meet and chat with.

“I'll just do it myself – it shouldn't take that long.”

I've heard this one many times.

And sometimes, absolutely, doing your own bookkeeping is the right choice,
If you enjoy it, understand what you're doing and have the time to keep it up to date, brilliant.

But there's another question worth asking.

What is your time worth?

Because I've spoken to business owners who spend their working day serving customers, making products, completing jobs or running their business...
..then spend their evening doing their bookkeeping.

And that's before they even get to the backlog.

The problem isn't always that bookkeeping is difficult.

It's the time it takes.

And when you're already tired, it's very easy for “I'll just do it later” to turn into three months of transactions waiting to be sorted.

There's another part that often gets overlooked too.

Doing the bookkeeping yourself doesn't necessarily mean you're seeing the bigger picture.

You might have recorded every transaction correctly, but are you looking at the information and asking:

🤔 Why has my profit changed?
🤔 Why was this month so much quieter?
🤔 Why am I working harder but not seeing more money?
🤔 Can I afford to invest in this?
🤔 What do I actually owe?

That's where good bookkeeping can become much more useful than simply keeping records.

It gives you information you can use.

And sometimes paying someone to handle the bookkeeping isn't about avoiding a task you couldn't do.

It's about getting your time back to do the things only you can do.

That's a very different decision.

I spoke about ‘Financial Foundations’ and wanted to share a bit of information with anyone that wasn’t at the event or anyone this could benefit…

A little reminder if you're a sole trader...

The money in your business bank account isn't necessarily the whole story 😬

Some of it may need to cover:
💷 Tax
📋 VAT
🚗 Business expenses
📅 Upcoming bills
📈 Future business costs

Getting into the habit of putting money aside as you go can make those future payments feel much less painful.

Your bank balance tells you how much money you have.

It doesn't always tell you how much you can safely spend.

I’m off to MOMENTUM tomorrow! ✨

I’m really looking forward to attending the MOMENTUM event tomorrow (Thursday 24th September) and spending the day surrounded by so many inspiring women in business.

I’ll also be speaking about something I’m very passionate about — bookkeeping and accounts — and, more importantly, how understanding your numbers can help you feel more in control of your business.

I’m really looking forward to meeting other women business owners, hearing their stories, making new connections and hopefully having lots of interesting conversations along the way. 💚

There’s something really lovely about getting business owners together in the same room and being able to share ideas, experiences and support each other.
