The Financial Storyteller

The Financial Storyteller Your numbers tell a story, but you can write the next chapter.

I help growing and established businesses unlock the stories in their accounts, helping them make decisions with clarity and confidence, using facts instead of gut feel.

A goal without a plan is just a dream.

Or something like that.

I think there's some second part about action as well, but that isn't what I want to post about so we can ignore that bit.

This time of year is all about dreams.

Sorry, goals.

Same thing though really, right?

And if you want to make your dreams come true, you need to know how to get there.

Which is great until you try and bring numbers into it.

Because numbers aren't your thing.

Doing stuff is your thing.

Motivating people.

Knowing your stuff inside out. 😎

Casting your unique brand of magic.

But not numbers. That's a massive ick.

You know that because you're all about the doing part, sometimes the planning bit gets lost, and you do a lot of learning as you go.

Which means you waste time and money firefighting.

So you know you need to take a breath and make a plan. With actual numbers. 🤮

You don't need to do it alone.

If you need a hand with writing your next chapter, The Financial Storyteller is here.

One afternoon. Me, you, hot beverages and lots of biscuits.

Maybe a spreadsheet or two. Obvs.

But afterwards?

You have a solid plan.

Numbers you believe in (and more importantly) understand.

And a friend for life.

Coz I'm awesome.

So you can go and do all the things you're amazing at, with more confidence and less risk.

Want to find out more? I'm here for you!

How do you know that the decisions you're making are good decisions?

Maybe you're like me and you like to sit on things for a while.

Or maybe you're more impulsive and like to choose quickly and move forward.

Whatever your method, how do you know that's it's the right decision?

Do you use any resources to reinforce your choices?

Partner, colleagues, coaches, Google, AI? Most likely is one of these.

Your accounts? Thought not. 😂

Gut feel is amazing but it's risky.

But gut feel paired with evidence? Now that's powerful.

What do you get if you cross an analytical brain with a creative brain?

Me!

Someone who doesn't really fit anywhere.

And yet manages to fit in almost everywhere.

I'm an accountant but I'm not an accountant. Because some of that stuff is boring as.

I'm creative but I'm not a creative. But that gives me awesome problem solving skills.

I know the rules, but I also know how to create something useful within that.

I know the questions to ask to get round the hurdles you're trying to jump over.

And I know where the secrets hide in your numbers.

The secrets that will give you the insight you need to make better decisions in the future.

So yes I am a contradiction.

Clashing colours.

But sometimes that's exactly what's needed.

If you only hear from your accountant when there's a tax bill due...

If you know what a P&L is but you still feel unsure when you look at your numbers...

If your gut feel is telling you something's off, but you can't find the evidence to back it up...

If your profit is shrinking and you don't know why...
.. we need a chat.

This is exactly what my Number Clarity sessions are for.

Do any of these feel familiar? Would you add anything?

Another jigsaw completed.

This was a tough one.

2000 pieces.

Only attempted one that size before and the design was much simpler.

If you ever fancy trying to complete a puzzle like this, there are a few things you need:

-Patience
-Attention to detail
-More patience
-Hyperfocus
-Did I mention patience?
-A large table to work at
-A very patient family who put up with no dining table until it's completed 🙈

Would you have a go at a puzzle like this? Or are you all the nopes?

This is where you start if you want one version of the truth...

This week I’ve been talking about what happens when everyone ends up working from their own numbers.

If you’re seeing that play out, don’t start with software.

Start here:

1. Where does your data come from?
People. Systems. Spreadsheets.
Map it out.

2. Who actually needs what?
Not everything. Just what helps them make decisions.

3. What’s the process?
Before you touch tech, be clear how it should work.

Because if you skip this, you don’t remove the chaos.

You just move it.

Get this right and you get:

Fewer workarounds
Better data
One version of the truth

If you’re about to change finance systems and want to get it right first time, drop me a message.

I’ll help you map it out properly before you invest in anything new.

I'm really bad at asking for testimonials.

It gives me the ick.

It also triggers a small part of me that is terrified that someone will say "no because I hate you".

So it brings me the most joy when someone leaves me a surprise review!

This one landed recently. 😁

It makes me so happy because it reflects to me that the things I want people to get from working with me, are exactly the things they love.

How do you get clients to leave you reviews or testimonials?

🤓

If we haven't met before, hi! I'm Jennie. I help growing and mature businesses get useful information out of their accounts, to support decision making and give clarity and confidence in where their business is right now, and how to get it to where they want it to be.

I'm also the lead singer in a band and I love puzzles. ❤️

The quickest way to waste money on your finance function?

Rolling out a new bit of software and hoping it fixes everything, without:

- Understanding the process your team goes through

- Being clear on what information is needed for decisions and reporting

- Knowing who owns what, and how they interact with the system

You don’t fix the problem.

You just move it somewhere else.

And now your team are tired because they’re re-learning systems, rebuilding spreadsheets and quietly working round it to get what they need.

Again.

Fixing finance doesn’t start with software.

It starts with understanding the system.

Running a business from home with kids around? It's like playing Jenga on a trampoline. 🙃

You're deep in a spreadsheet and suddenly someone needs a snack.

Your client call gets a surprise cameo from a small human asking where their left shoe is.

And don't even get me started on trying to focus with YouTube blaring in the background.

This is the reality of work life balance for parents. But it's real. And it's ours.

Messy, noisy, chaotic... and somehow still working.

If you want to tighten up on the "somehow" and really get behind the real reasons your brand of magic has lasted so long, you know where I am. I'm taking bookings for Number Clarity and Number Crunch sessions for November now!

What's the most ridiculous thing that's happened to you mid-client call? Mine was probably when my potty-training toddler got caught short in the middle of my office...
