Please do not be ashamed of your accounts.

A good finance professional will never judge you.

They may give you suggestions on how to improve.

Maybe tell you about a rule you should have followed or something you've claimed for that you shouldn't.

But you should never be made to feel stupid.

I have never seen someone's accounts and thought:

"Blimey, she must be an absolute moron" or

"This is hilarious! She's miscoded that expense!".

What I see is someone creative and driven and passionate who's running a successful business, and hasn't been taught how to do accountancy.

Not an idiot.

Just someone who has never had the support they need.

Numbers don't come easily to everyone.

That's why the Fearless Female Finance Festival Exists.

I can't stop the big things keeping you awake at night. 😬

That's on you.

That’s the thing about running a business... every decision feels personal.

And when it's personal, the risks feel riskier.

New staff? New product? Bigger office?
Exciting… but scary.

That's why I have my crystal ball (ok... usually Excel)

I can't tell the future. But I can use the magic of forecasting and scenario planning! 😂😂🙈

You get to “test drive” decisions before making them

You see the best case, worst case and everything in between

You swap uncertainty for clarity, and you understand "what happens if...?"

I work with business owners who are focused on growth to map out the numbers behind their ideas.

Suddenly, that decision isn’t a leap into the unknown. It’s a step you’ve already rehearsed.

Confidence replaces anxiety

Clarity replaces overthinking

You make choices knowing you’ve protected your people, your cash, and your future.

Your numbers already hold the answers; you just need someone to translate them.

Why do we put up with s**t systems?

They only do half of what we need.

They don't talk to each other.

Or they can, but nobody's ever taken the time to set them up.

So we end up with spreadsheets, workarounds and people entering the same information in three different places.

And we just accept that that's how things work.

But those s**t systems are costing you...

Time... Energy... Money...

And probably a fair bit of sanity.

Your finance systems should be (and can!) make running your business easier.

You shouldn't have to enter the same information more than once.

You should be able to find the information you need.

You shouldn't have to feel lost and directionless because you just don't know how much you can afford.

Your finance systems should support one version of the truth.

You don't need to put up with s**t.

As if! I'm a bit excited about this.

As soon as I heard about the Fearless Female Finance Festival I knew I had to get involved.

If you've followed me for a while you'll know my frustrations around how people get made to feel small or stupid for not understanding their numbers, and how that fear doesn't need to exist.

Real connections are made when people come together in person.

I was speaking at two networking groups this week.

One for social enterprises and one for women in business.

Two different locations.

Two different groups of people.

But one thing was the same.

The connection.❤️ Sounds cheesy doesn't it? 😂

But both rooms were full of people who listened and offered support and help to people they didn't know.

Not every networking group has that.

Plenty of them see you fending off aggressive, business card thrusters, who just want to sell to you.

But the Socially Shared Womens Business Support Network has always been different.

Karen Heap has nurtured a community of people who prioritise connection and collaboration and it's genuinely refreshing to be a part of.

I was really conscious that both of my sessions needed to be useful and not just a boring accounts lecture.

I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to share things that might genuinely help people.

Turns out talking about numbers can bring people together after all. 😂

This Thursday I'm speaking at Socially Shared Stourbridge with a whistle-stop tour around getting to grips with your numbers.

It's not something that you planned to need to know when you started your business.

You just wanted to carry on being awesome at the thing you're awesome at.

But it doesn't need to be stressful. I'm going to do my best to simplify what you need to know about tax, bookkeeping and MTD... hopefully without making you want to rip your eyes out.

I'm speaking at Get Social on Wednesday about the numbers that are really important for Charities and CICs.

If you are involved in running a charity or CIC, we'll be looking at reserves, restricted funds, and how to make sure you're properly funding your overheads.

Asking questions doesn't make you sound stupid.

But there is such a thing as a stupid question.

I would rather sit with someone who asked me a bunch of questions because they want to learn, than someone who pretends they know what's what, but really doesn't have a clue.

Why? Because I know that the one who wants to learn will go away and and use their new knowledge to get things done.

And new questions will come that build on their knowledge.

But the other one? They will just keep pushing back and challenging on the same points over and over. They won't move forward. They'll just keep looping round in uncertainty.

And what's worse, it's obvious which one you are. If you're pretending to know stuff, people can tell. They're just not rude enough to call you out on it.

Do yourself a favour and ask the questions. Admit to the gaps in your knowledge and swallow your pride.

Good people won't think you're stupid. They'll admire you for being honest.

So yes, there is such a thing as a stupid question. It's the one that's already been asked and answered, but you didn't pay attention to what was said.

Doing your own bookkeeping isn’t about becoming an accountant.

Although sometimes it feels like it.

You never had lessons on Profit and Loss and Balance Sheets and Year Ends and Tax Returns when you were at school.

Quadratic equations were bad enough.

It can seem really overwhelming when all you wanted to do was the thing you’re awesome at.

But now you’re having to learn all about accounts.

And it hurts your brain.

What if I told you it’s less about being rain-man level maths genius, and more about following a few simple rules?

On Thursday next week I’m speaking at Socially Shared Stourbridge to explain exactly that.
We’ll demystify those reports, go through some simple habits that make life easier, and answer your questions

One of the trickiest things for a charity to manage, is how much money they actually have available to spend.

It seems like it should be obvious.

Step 1: look in the bank
Step 2: spend money.

But it's not like that for charities.

Charities need to keep a number months of unrestricted funds in the bank at all times. The magic number is set by the reserves policy, but it's usually 3-6 months of running costs.

So just because the cash is sitting in the bank, it doesn't mean it's available to spend.

Then there are those funds that have been supplied with specific criteria on how they can be used. You can't spend that on anything that's not on the original list.

And then you need to know what payments are coming up next and what funding is in the pipeline (and how much of that will be paid by cheque… why is this still a thing btw?!)

It can go from being cash rich to no longer viable in moments when you look at the breakdown of funds that are held.
