⚡ VAT Is Coming Off Domestic Electricity

The Government has announced that VAT will be removed from domestic electricity bills from 1st October 2026.

It is important to note that the confirmed announcement relates to domestic electricity, rather than general business electricity bills. This distinction is exactly why it pays to look beyond the headline before making financial assumptions.

At Penney’s Accountancy, we help you understand which changes genuinely apply to you and your business.

📰 Do Not Build a Business Plan on a Headline

With a new government and a Budget approaching, there will be plenty of predictions, rumours and opinions. Before changing your prices, spending plans or business structure, wait for the confirmed detail and understand how it applies to your circumstances.

Every business is different, and a national announcement may not affect everyone in the same way.

Need help separating the facts from the headlines? Speak to Penney’s Accountancy.

📊 Are You Making Decisions With Up to Date Figures?

It is difficult to plan confidently when your financial information is several months behind. Up to date accounts can help you understand:

✅ How the business is performing
✅ Whether cash flow is improving
✅ Which costs are increasing
✅ What money may be available to invest
✅ Whether your plans are financially realistic

🏙️ What Do the New Powers for Mayors Mean?

The Government has announced plans to give English mayors a greater share of locally generated tax revenues. From next spring, this is expected to begin with business rates.

Further details about business rates and income tax retention are due to be announced at the Budget. The aim is to allow more locally raised funds to be invested in areas such as transport, housing, skills, and employment.

The full details are still to come, and we will continue following the announcements for anything that could affect local businesses.

💳 FAQ: Can I Claim a Business Expense Paid From My Personal Account?

Yes, in many cases you can still claim an allowable business expense even if you accidentally paid for it from your personal account.

The important thing is to:
✅ Keep the receipt or invoice
✅ Record the expense correctly
✅ Make sure it was genuinely for business purposes
✅ Avoid claiming any personal element of the cost

Mixing personal and business spending can make your records harder to manage, so it is always better to use your business account where possible.

Unsure whether an expense is allowable? Speak to the Penney’s Accountancy team before including it in your accounts.
