Have you missed the first MTD for Income Tax deadline? Do not panic — but do not ignore it!

The first quarterly MTD deadline was 7th August 2026.

If you have missed it, the good news is that HMRC will not issue penalty points for late quarterly updates during the 2026/27 tax year. However, you still need to catch up and submit the outstanding update.

So, what should you do now?

✅ Make sure you are registered for MTD for Income Tax
✅ Use HMRC-compatible accounting software
✅ Bring your digital bookkeeping records up to date from the start of the tax year
✅ Submit the overdue quarterly update as soon as possible
✅ Keep your records up to date ready for the next deadline — 7th November 2026

If you are unsure where to start, we can help you get your bookkeeping up to date, make sure your software is ready for MTD and prepare and submit your quarterly updates to HMRC.

Missing the deadline does not make the problem disappear — but it can be sorted.

Get in touch with HMS Accounting if you need help catching up with MTD.

3 Xero Hacks to Make Bookkeeping Easier

If bookkeeping is taking up too much of your time, it’s probably because you’re not using Xero to its full potential. Here are three game-changing hacks to speed things up, reduce errors, and make your life so much easier.

🚀 1. Automate Recurring Invoices
Got clients you bill every month? Stop manually creating invoices. Xero lets you set up repeating invoices so they send automatically—keeping your cash flow consistent and saving you time.

⚡ 2. Bulk Fix Errors with ‘Find & Recode’
Entered the wrong category on multiple transactions? Instead of fixing them one by one (painful), use Xero’s ‘Find & Recode’ tool to update everything in seconds.

⌨️ 3. Use Keyboard Shortcuts to Move Faster
If clicking through endless menus slows you down, Xero’s keyboard shortcuts will change your life. Press ‘/A’ to jump straight to your bank accounts or ‘/I’ for invoices—no more aimless clicking.

💡 Work smarter, not harder. Set these up today.
